A bit of background is in order:

I live out in the sticks, but my little homestead lacks a garage (every building here is on pylons for a reason, and that reason flows along one side of my property line.)

So, lacking a proper high-dollar stationary toolbox that I can just park next to and reach into, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for toolboxes that are portable (even if "portable" means it looks like someone's rolling luggage kit), and (most importantly) be able to best compartmentalize things like wrenches, sockets, etc.

Sure I could park a truck toolbox in the bed behind the back glass, but I use my bed a bit too often to sacrifice that kind of space.

So does anyone have any ideas and/or suggestions?

I have one of these in my garage that I use all the time. It's big enough to keep all the basic tools in and roll around. I have another stationary toolbox with all my specialty stuff in it.

That kind of gives me an idea... maybe take the wheels off that (or get a non-wheeled toolbox), and park it on one of these...

Seems to me something 16 to 18 inches high, on wheels, sitting on a homebuilt platform so as to allow you to back up to it and roll the box off the platform and into the bed of your truck might be the cat’s meow, or the dog’s bark or the owl’s hoot.....i think you get my drift.

I highly recommend this toolbox. I have 4 of them
1- metric tools
1- sae tools
1 wood working tools
1- welding tools
Then I have a 72” toolbox top and bottom boxes for everything else.
I have too many tools!
All of them are loaded heavy.

Yeah you have to put them together so you wouldn’t have to put the legs on it. Harbor Freight Tools also has those wagons. And a plus is there’s always a coupon and a choice of 6 colors too.

You obviously are good at thinking "outside the box". I have the same problem here on the banks of the Cape Fear in NC, but no good solution! Got hold of an old metal student locker but it leaks water around the door when it rains.

These are great tool chests. Very well built and affordable. If you don't mind one in black, red, or blue, here is a coupon good until the end of 2019 that makes it more affordable.

HF now offers them in green, yellow and orange, but I don't think this coupon works on those newer colors.

I use a tool cabinet top chest much like the HF offering. I have a lift table cart for getting it in and out of the truck. I keep my power tools in the modular milwaukee boxes.20181112_133000.jpg

A lot of the 1/2 ton company trucks I see in the construction business are 8' foot beds so I think that's a great idea for people actually using these trucks for work.
