Is the fuse box on the left side of the dash (driver side)? I planned to buy this (link below) and then go to local store for the "add a fuse thing" ......I've never done it, but it seems easy if that fuse box is to the left of dash

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0003NN83U/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

The kit I bought had the fuse alreay on it. I just tapped into a wire that was already hot and ran my ground. Took me about 30 min to install. Used my test light to find the wire that would work

yeah, this kit has a fuse too.........I see some ppl still doing the "add a fuse" thing even with it versus of tapping into a wire

OK help me out .....where did you "tap" ......I just noticed the fuse box is in the engine compartment and not one inside. Mine has a fuse "in line" also and I can just tap a wire because it comes with this lil thing. But where?? I pulled the side panel off inside and see some wires

The funny part is I’ve never owned a radar detector. Are there certain models that I should look for ?

I highly recommend the Uniden R3, however the R1 is a little cheaper if you don't care about the GPS features. When my Passport finally died I figured I'd just get another. However Escort has jacked their prices way up. So I did some research and found not only is the Uniden less expensive, it outperforms everything else on the market. Hands down. So no brainer for me. Been very happy with it, and it's paid for itself several times over now. Best deal I found was here...

Personally I wouldn't hard wire or permanently mount one. In some states they are totally illegal and you can get a ticket for just haveing one in operation. Plus it's just something else to give thieves a reason to break into you're truck.

The only thing hardwired is the power pigtail. Nothing on mine is permanently mounted either. I can remove both, when needed, and you can't tell it was ever there. No holes. I do agree about checking state laws. There's a chart of states out there that tell you where it's legal, and what bands the states use. Radar Jammers are banned way more than detectors. The R3, and some others, will let you disable bands to speed up response times by not scanning those frequencies. For example, I believe Ohio is the only state that still uses X band. So unless you live there, or pass though frequently, you can disable X. I'll see if I can find that chart, or site.

Here it is...

Here's mine. I always mount mine under the mirror, and tap in there.

What did you use to mount this?

I’ve been looking at blendmount but this is super clean.

Scotch 2-sided tape. I tried Velcro at first, but the stuff I had wasn't tight enough. It wobbled a bit, plus wasn't as clean looking. The other idea I had was to cut a slot in the lower mirror mount cover, with just the tongue of the Uniden mount sticking out. I'd still like to do that. I had/have a Blendmount style mount for my Jeep. But the site I bought it from (Country Joy) said the mirror shaft was the same size in my Ram. It wasn't. But it worked great for years in the Jeep. Country Joy has numerous options in mounts, but I was trying to make the one I had work.

No problem. The tape was supposed to be temporary while I decided on a better setup. That said, it's been there for almost a year through sub-zero and 100+ temps. It hasn't budged.

The funny part is I’ve never owned a radar detector. Are there certain models that I should look for ?

Valentine One. There is no substitute. I’ve had Cobras, BEL’s, Unidens, and Passports. The V1 spanks them all in range, reliability, and many other ways. They’re firmware upgradeable, invisible to RDD’s like the VG2 (V1 operates on a frequency other than what VG2 looks for), and have 2 antennas for directional detection. The arrows tell you what direction the threat is coming from, and can detect multiple radars, and will flash the arrow in the direction of the greatest threat.

There is a new RDD (radar detector detector) out there, but they’re not as common as the VG2. It’s called the Spectre Elite. It can see V1, but only within 100 feet of it due to V1’s shielding. I live in VA and have used my V1 with no issues. V1 also has an accessory that will mute audio below a certain speed called SAVVY. SAVVY’s side benefit is that it plugs into your OBD II port, and provides power to V1 as well, so no wiring required at all. A remote display is also available which allows V1 to be mounted more visibly, but blacks out all the lights on the main unit. PM me for questions.
