My floor console came with the matching radio bezel, and it has the AC outlet for plugging in a household plug. My question is, do I need to buy the DC>AC factory converter? It would be nice to have the outlet working.

You should be able to install an aftermarket power inverter. They can be mounted anywhere and use an extension cord custom cut to your preferred length to connect it. As I described I have done this hundreds of times in my 18 wheelers and hot shot trucks.
