I hope this thread makes it to someone else who is considering going from a 1500 to a 2500. I go through a lot of vehicles. I rarely honestly need to tow anything heavy duty. Only reason I wanted a 2500 is because I was on my 4th 1500 and just wanted something different so I didn’t feel like I was driving the same thing but more expensive. I trade when the warranty is up. I do tow up to about 7-8k lbs on occasion and maybe 3000 lbs once or twice a month. With the price of diesel fuel, and the lack of real need for having a diesel powered truck, the 6.4 was the direction I went.

I have had my loaded up 2018 Laramie for about 6 months now and here are my observations:

1.) This ain’t no 1500! The truck drives like a truck! The 1500 is so comfortable you sometimes forget it’s a truck! In comparison, the 2500 rides stiffer, has a slight sway to it, has VERY different and noticeable braking as examples.

2.) You might miss the 8 speed trans. The 2500, while not really a slouch, is definitely slower performance wise than the 1500. I liked the fact that the 1500 was actually faster than a lot of the cars on the road. The 2500 is not “peppy” like the 1500 is but because of the driving characteristics noted in number 1 above, you don’t expect it to be. Point is, if you love how fast the 1500 is, be prepared to give that up. You are in a truck now! I should also note how glad I am that I got one with the 4.10’s!

3.) Even with 8k lbs behind it, the truck is unphased. This is certainly where the 2500 shines...as designed. You can hardly tell you are pulling anything. Maybe this would change if I pulled more but with the 1500, you knew when you had 3k lbs on it. This truck practically laughs in the face of an 8k lb payload.

4.) You feel like you are driving a truck at all times. This is important for some people and this truck has you covered, it sits high and feels like a solid piece of work machinery while still having street manners at the same time.

5.) Be prepared to feed it...a lot. If I had one complaint, it’s the fact that this thing is thirsty. Frequent trips to the gas station are coming your way if you get in a 2500. Granted, I try to make it drive like my 1500. I just came back from a 1000 mile road trip and got 15.2 MPG. I average about 13 otherwise. But I am well aware that no one should get into a 2500 with expectations of good gas mileage but it is certainly noticeable vs the 1500.

6.) Everything about a 2500 is more expensive. For example, just to pull my two Utility style trailers required me to buy a $300 drop hitch just to accommodate the height difference between my old 1500 and my 2500. Today I got an oil change. It cost $87. I can only imagine if I kept it long enough to need brakes, they are going to be very expensive. Point being....once you go HD, be prepared to pay for it.

7.) Just because it’s a 2500 doesn’t mean it’s got the posi rear end! I demand that any truck I have has this. Why Dodge makes ANY 2500 without the LSD is beyond me. I almost bought one prior to this truck until I discovered that it did not have an LSD. Glad that happened because I love the truck I wound up with that just so happens to have the LSD. Get it together Dodge/Ram! NO 2500 should come without an LSD!

I’ll add other stuff as I think of it. Overall: no regrets. This is a fantastic machine. I understand the next gen coming is going to get a ZF 8-speed. Might upgrade! Hope this helps someone!

Great fair review. Found the same thing. My 2018 2500 6.4 is my first 2500. 5 previous Ram 1500. It does require adjustment. My wife pulls her goose neck trailer and we find when towing, this is a true road rig.

Thanks for posting this. I love my 1500, but in the next few years I'd like to go up to a 2500. I don't *need* one, I just love the way they look, and the higher payload would definitely come in handy on occasion.

Do you think fog lights make or break nighttime visibility in the 2500? It seems like most 2500s don't come with them. When I was shopping for my 1500 fog lights were a requirement because I think the 1500 looks a lot better with them, but the 2500 still looks good without.

Dude, if you don't need a 2500, don't get one. I miss everything about my 1500. Who cares how tall it sits or whatever. The 1500 is more comfortable and rides worlds better. If I didn't have a need for 2100 pounds of payload I would have never sold my 1500.

I can’t say I have paid attention to the fog lights. I think every Ram I have ever owned had them but I rerelease use them.

I am going to comment on your comment. :)

1. I have never owned a 1500. I went from owning 3 different Dakotas straight to the big boy 2500! Before I purchased I test drove many 16' 1500's & 2500's. With the new coil spring suspension I do not feel the 2500 rides much rougher than the 1500. Especially after I dropped the tire pressure to about 50-55 pounds. I have drove several Chevy & Ford 3/4 tons from the company I work for & feel the Ram rides much better than both. As you said... you definitely know you are driving a truck but I don't feel it is uncomfortable.

2. It will be interesting to see how an 8 speed will work in the up coming HD's. If they make it as bullet proof as the old 727 Torquflight I think it will be a winner. Hard to believe most vehicles were only 3 speeds when I was growing up.

3. For a gasser it really does pull great! I was only pulling 4,700lbs last night through the Kentucky & Tennessee Mountains but it was climbing those at 75mph like it was nothing.

4. It does sit very high & proud! One of the reasons why I bought it. It almost seems like they have lowered the 1500 & raised the 2500. I feel the 1500 is about 2" lower than it should be & the 2500 is about 1 or 2" higher than it needs to be.

5. Yes it is a thirsty beast! Seems like the more years go by & the more miles I put on it the better fuel mileage I get. In fact now it gets better mileage than my 04' 4.7l Dakota ever got. Last summer pulling my 5,000lb. boat on a long trip I averaged 16mpg. Another long trip with just the truck itself I was able to get 20mpg per the lio-meter.

6. Yes everything on an HD is going to be expensive! There is a guy on here that pulls a Hot Shot Trailer full time & he got over 100,000mi. before having to replace brakes. I am feeling optimistic that I will get that many miles on mine before a brake replace. I had to replace brakes & rotors on one of our work trucks & yes it was nearly double what you would pay for a 1/2 ton.

7. I kind of agree, I think the 2500 (at least the 4 X 4) should come standard with LSD. Thankfully it is not a very expensive upgrade!

I am fully happy with my 16' 2500 Ram purchase! I really like the 4th gen body style. I am kind of dreading what they are going to do with the next gen. HD's. I feel the 5th gen 1500 is almost too pretty & refined. Almost looking like a Chevy now. I really like the more mean & lean look of the 4th gens. What I find comical is newer Chevy & Ford's have a similar design to the rough & tough Rams. And I think they look great! In fact I think all of the big three have great looking trucks right now.

Glad you are happy with your purchase as well!

Having 1500s and 2500s in my life - I can agree with you.

I loved how my 2500 leveled with 35" tires just TOWERED over other trucks and cars on the road. I don't get that with my 1500. The 2500 looks tougher as well. I like the front bumper set up more than the 1500s.

I've never seen the appeal of an IFS 1500. May as well buy a Tacoma.

More room than a Tacoma, more power, almost the same gas mileage, rides the same, nicer and more upscale interior, more options available. That's just some of the reasons.

May as well buy a solid axle 2500 if you need those things and sidestep the weak chassis.

But if you don't want the harsher ride or the bigger truck, the 1500 makes sense. If I didn't have a need for a 2000+ payload, I would have never gotten rid of my 1500. I loved that truck.

Buggymaster: Thanks a lot for your post. 2017 Rebel here. I was at the dealership dropping my Rebel off to get some issues fixed. There was a Power Wagon on the lot that I fell in love with. I pull a 23’ bay boat which the Rebel handles wjth no problems. When I pick up my truck tomorrow, I need to look the other way when passing by the Power Wagon.
