Midsize pickups offer the utility of having a cargo bed, but they’re also more easily maneuverable and generally less expensive than brands’ full-size or heavy-duty offerings. Customers already have options in the U.S., such as the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Range, GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline, and Toyota Tacoma .

Ram has been absent from the crowded midsize truck segment since the Dakota’s retirement after the 2011 model year. As an alternative, the brand offered the Ram 1500 Classic, which was an earlier generation of the pickup available for thousands less than the base models of the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado . It gave Ram an intriguing alternative to building a new, smaller truck.

Ram announced the 1500 Classic’s retirement in 2024. Now, brand CEO Chris Feuell confirms there’s a smaller pickup on the horizon.

A New Dakota?

Unfortunately, Feuell wasn’t willing to say much more about the midsize truck. She said the company had already decided on a platform for the pickup but indicated this info was a surprise announcement for later. She also indicated that reviving the Dakota model name was possible, but Ram hadn’t decided on a final moniker for this product yet. More details about the vehicle will come in 2025.

There’s still the possibility for the midsize truck to ride on a body-on-frame platform. However, Ram’s parent company, Stellantis, also has its unibody STLA Large and Medium underpinnings that could support a smaller pickup. The production timeline for the tinier Ram truck is also a mystery. According to an agreement with the United Auto Workers union, the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois might receive upgrades to support building this pickup. If that happens, then production could begin around 2027.

So far, there are no powertrain details, but Stellantis is engineering its new platforms to support purely combustion, hybrid, and even EV layouts. TopSpeed reached out to Ram for more details about the smaller pickup, but a spokesperson had no comment.

Ram 700 made in Brazil for more than 10 years

Yes, the 2024 Ram 700 is made in Brazil at a Fiat factory in Betim, Minas Gerais. The Ram 700 is a rebadged version of the Fiat Strada, which is Brazil's best-selling vehicle.

Does no one even fact check articles before publishing them anymore? Several mistakes and plenty of speculation in that article.

I'd like it if Ram made a mid size truck as much as anyone. But it seems like these types of rumors have been circulating almost as long as the Dakota has been out of production. Maybe something will finally happen now that Tavares is gone, but I'm not holding my breath on it.

They know they are just fact-free generating content for clicks, but people reward them for it by viewing it and linking to it so it's profitable to keep pumping out junk articles.

In the spirit of funny looking trucks, I was going to be a smart ___ and generate a picture of a ram 1500 with an aztek front end, but even ChatGPT knew what was up ("too complex", read between the lines a little, eh?) and thought it best to short circuit:

The first compact Ram pickup since the Mitsubishi-sourced Ram 50, the Ram 700 is built in Brazil and sold in Mexico and the Caribbean. Underneath the Ram logos is a Fiat Strada, and the Fiat name remains on the windows and the engine cover. The latter is ironic, since the engine itself is the only Chrysler-related part: the 1.6 liter four-cylinder is the Neon-derived "E.torQ" engine.

Pretty sure it will actually be a Dodge Hornet with a bed stuck on the back. Made in Italy with a 1 litre turbo. But it will have a nice stripe package. The Italian Overlords will wonder why Americans are not rushing to pay a premium price to it.

The downfall of the Dakota was fuel economy equal to or worse than the full size trucks. I owned a GMC 3500 crew cab, 8 foot bed that got better economy. Cost of operation, not just smaller size should be a primary design factor.

Whatever govt crap killed the small and mid-sized trucks needs to be killed itself. There is no justifiable reason that we can’t have Chevy Luv or ‘80s Toyota with an economical 4-cyl, a Ranger, S-10, or Tacoma with a 4 or 6-cylinder option, and a full-sized truck with a 6 or 8-cylinder option from each car company that wanted to produce.

Let gov’t MINIMALLY suggest safety standards and then get the heck outta the way for the rest and let US decide what we want to buy!!!
