Can anyone that has had a ram pentastar for a while (2wd) share real world performance and mpg? What is the true reliability of the 8 speed in the long term like 150000 plus miles if anyone has put this kind of mileage on this type transmission?

thanks in advance

A friend bought a '14 Ram 4x4 with the pentastar. Has probably 8000km on it now. Has gotten consistent 25mpg mostly city driving. I am sure on a steady highway trip he would be in solid 30's. He absolutely loves his truck.

My mom has one in a 300. 37k miles no issues and pretty cosistant 30-32. On road trips as high as 35.

I came onto this site partly because I bought my ram and upgraded from a 96 chev 1500. I love the v6 with the 8 speed. It shifts like butter and the mileage is incredible (for a full size truck). I do 75%+ city driving and still come out in the 20's all the time. Highway driving is really good. I have 15 000 km's (canuck here) on it and I couldn't be happier.

Plus sides: good power for passing etc. Great on gas. Lots of optoons. Still tows up to almost 7000 (with the better gears) almost 5000 (standard gears). Cheaper engine to purchase.

Downsides: doesn't sound like a ram truck. Likes to gear hunt on hills and steeps.

I find it drives like a semi (transport). It has a lot of gears to go through and once you get used to driving it you get really efficient at all speeds. If you're into that kind of thing.

not sure how fuel mileage of a 300, durango, or someone's buddy's clearly overestimated mileage is helpful to the OP's question lol.

I had a 13 for 10 months and put 26k miles on it. I'd say hand calculated you can expect an average of 22-24 mpg if you drive at least 50% highway. The power was sufficient, and it didn't have any issues. Good combo. My ecodiesel gets about 27 average with the same mix but cost a lot more because I got a higher trim. Ecodiesel is nicer to drive but the pentastar was quicker to 60.

I would start with the EPA estimates. Most people get a little worse than EPA in a gas engine unless they baby the gas pedal. If diesel, you will get a little better than EPA (most brands are like this, gas bs diesel for EPA estimates).

People will give you quotes but you have to weed out the EVIC scores; they will be high and not real world. Look on Fuelly. Com where you will see hand calculated figures for a given trim level.

520 miles at an *average* of 67.5 mph (4x4 though):

Also something I have ran into on here is if someone is reporting the total distance driven on their truck in kilometers they are probably using imperial gallons which are bigger, so the number is inflated.

I have a Pentastar Jeep Wrngler with the six speed manual with the 3.73 rear end and 285/70/17s. Right now, on its best day, it'll do 21 with the mixed driving that I do. I drive slow and smooth. I can't see the pick up being a whole lot more aerodynamic than the Jeep. The jeep weighes aprox 4100 lbs. I'd like to drive one of those trucks that supposedly gets 25-30 mpg.

I have a 13 Mustang with the 3.7L V6. Six speed manual, 3.31 rear end, alum driveshaft, CAI. That engine is, for all practical purposes, the same as the Pentastar. The Mustang weighs 3500 pounds. It won't get 25 mpg in the city. If you want to see 30 on the highway, you can't go over 60.

My salesman drove a Pentastar Ram for a while. He said 23 on the highway.

Like I said, I'd sure like do drive one of those magical 30 mpg Rams.

I have heard that these new engines, the Pentastar and Hemi take 30,000 to be fully broken in, and the fuel economy will go up just a tiny bit, until then. More wishful thinking?

I had a 2010 2dr rubicon and it burned gas on the road like crazy. Maybe got 15 on its evic on the highway. My Hemi ram is a lot more fuel efficient while making three times the power. I always get over 20 over the road.

My buddy has the new Ram diesel and he says the evic shows over 28 on the highway.

To me it doesn't matter which truck I drive if I'm not going to have a Hemi. I think the Hemi is the best feature of a Ram.

OP was asking about mileage and he was given numbers on that issue. And yes, those are dead on numbers. I calculated a few of the fuel fillups. So thats how the info is helpful to the OP. LOL!

RAM optimized the hell out of the V6 model: Grill shutters, 8 speed transmission, the chin spoiler, rake, tires all help with fuel consumption. In comparison the Wrangler has fender flares, a steeper windshield, much better approach angles, most likely off-road worthy tires.

Not that I believe a ram got 30 mpg unless it is the diesel, but a ram is far more aerodynamic than a wrangler. Let's start with the flat windshield. I am on my 5 the windshield in my wrangler.

I had a 4 door wrangler for a rental when my wife's grand cherokee was in the shop. My 2500 with the 6.4 got better mileage per the evic from my work to my house which is mostly freeway. I knew the wrangler wouldn't be great because it's just a box on wheels but I expected better than my 7k truck gets.
