The powertrain and drivetrain in the 2019’s are largely carryover from 4th gens, at least until they release the mild hybrid models. For now, they have the same engines, transmissions, gears and differentials. 5th gens do have a bit of weight savings, but are rated the exact same MPG for the gas engines as the 4th gens, at least for the Hemi variants.

On their face they look the same however, the ZF 8 Speed has been reworked for the 5th generation, the rear end has a fluid heater that routes coolant from the engine to the diff. And who knows if the MDS software has been modified, ect. So no, they are not the same.

At 80mph I can get 20-22mpg depending on conditions.
Overall, after being stuck in Miami traffic for hours my truck has 1690 miles and it's average is 18.7mpg.

I do quite a bit of highway driving, but when I get stuck in city traffic it's the sit and idle type of wait.

3.21s with 4x2 fwiw.

That's why I said "largely the same" and not "exactly the same." What specifically did they rework in the 8-speed transmission for the 5th gens? Did they change individual gear ratios in any way? I know the final gearing is exactly the same (3.21 and 3.92 are still the only gearing options for the 5.7 Hemi engines).

I remember reading something to the effect of 'improved response and shift speed' which is auto speak for "we didn't do ****" haha. I had the ZF in my durango and it was excellent. It's still excellent in my Ram. I will say it may be a bit more smooth, maybe. Could just be the V8 vs my V6 in the durango. Largely the same in the powertrain department is spot on IMO. I'd wager that the numbers are perhaps that much more realistic than on the 4th gens. I live in the mountains and EPA stickers are historically pretty rosey compared to reality. They have been getting better over the past few years. Personally I had a bit more comfort buying a redesign when the major powertrain stuff was already sorted.

Quality of gas also makes a difference. I usually fill up at a nearby Shell and my avg has been 17 or so. This past Saturday I filled up at Chevron and it dropped to 15. Filled up again today at Shell and it’s back up to 17. I would have thought the Chevron was ok but they must have a ****** source.

Update

I’m now seeing 20.8 mpg mixed driving 65 and under. Hand calculated 2 tanks same driving routes. My MPG jumped after I broke 2500 miles.

Not to sound like an ass, but why are non 2019 peeps commenting? Totally different truck than previous years.
I don't know if I would say totally different, power train wise there are a many similarities between Gen 4 and Gen 5 - same Hemi, 8 speed transmission and similar choices for rear end gearing. I would expect the 2019 to be slightly better as it is lighter and has better aerodynamics.

I think our results also will be similar, that is for most normal truck drivers our mileage will likely be slightly below what is on the window stickers.

Regardless of the similarities, this is the 5th Generation section and those that OWN 5th Gen trucks would rather read about 5th Gen owner experiences and not clutter threads with other Gen owner input. I'll check into the 4th Generation section if I want to read about 4th Gen stuff.
You 4th Gen guys can start a 4th Gen fuel mileage thread over there.

Thanks ......

Took a 160 mile freeway trip over the weekend (picked up 2" Mopar lift :) ). Reset my mpg on the trip back (80 miles). Got 19.9 MPG with cruise control set @75mph.

Truck has 300 miles on it. Crew Cab 4x4.

City seems to be around 15mpg.

Last fillup the trip A meter was at 17.5. Hand calculated it at 17.2 mpg.

Think the largest discrepancy I've seen it at was 0.5mpg between hand calcs and truck calcs.

The question that none of the dealerships I've been to can answer is why the EPA gas mileage listed on the stickers of the trucks with 3.21 and 3.92 gears is the same. If the engine is turning more RPMs with the 3.92 diff to travel the same distance as a truck with a 3.21, it should logically get less gas mileage. Once I calculated the RPM difference to travel a mile it showed about 1.3 less miles per gallon than the 3.21. Maybe not as big a difference around town but at highway speeds there should be some kind of change. The thread above doesn't differentiate between rear gear rations. Can anyone tell me what they get with a 3.21 and those with a 3.92?

I don’t understand why, but I have not gotten better than 11.4 mpg!
This is with the auto start feature with the e torque engine and not flooring it. I’ve reset the meters each tank and this is the best I’ve gotten, kinda sucks having it this bad

Mostly city and heavy traffic? Have you checked those numbers by hand / fuelly etc?

Light city traffic mainly but a few longer highway trips and really no difference , I can only imagine what will happen when I put off-road tires on the 22’s it will prob drop below 10

Have 89 miles on mine. Very easy driving in the city so far @ 16.2 on the computer. 5.7L with 3.21 gears. The dealer filled it with 87 octane. 1500 Bighorn.

just passed 2500 miles today ... got gas and the lie-o-meter said 18.1 ... hand calculated to 18.1 .. this was 90% local driving with lots of road construction stops and using E15 gas 88 octane .. think the etorque helps ... overall my calculated local driving has been 18 to 19 mpg and hiway driving is around 20 .. i am VERY happy with my gas mileage and the etorque setup

I went to Toronto this past weekend. Round trip roughly about 1200 miles. Got the best 20.6mpg at 73mph cruise control. That’s the best ever with 3000 miles on the truck. Usually its 10.5-11 around town. I’m surprised the E-torque didn’t do much better around town.

Hopefully the mph will improve after the engine brakes in.
