Does anyone here have a backup camera mounted in their bumper like I do? It hasn't worked since I bought the truck. I used the AlfaOBD & app and I get the "Camera not available" screen when I switch to reverse. I am guessing that the previous owner damaged it or broke it.
Can anyone give me any tips on possibly fixing this or a respectable place to buy a replacement without ripping my wallet to shreds?
Thanks in advance!20200416_133219.jpg 20200416_133219.jpg 20200416_133219.jpg

Soooo, they removed the camera lenses from the tailgate handle and put it in the bumper?? Hmm. I would think the optimum spot for that camera would be were they put it, in the tailgate but uh, is there like an empty socket in your tailgate handle where it used to be? Did they replace it with a regular handle? I would drop your tailgate and unplug that big harness at the bottom of it to see how they connected it after the relocated it.

What year is that pickup? I can’t imagine Ram sticking with the exact same camera lens throughout the years because uh, ya know, that would make too much sense but this is what the camera lens looks like on my 18.

OP, does your tailgate have the factory electric lock? If not, that would make it pretty easy to tell if your truck came with a camera or not because I would imagine that if it didn’t, you wouldn’t have that big plugin that I’m talking about on the bottom of your tailgate which would mean they tried to add a camera to it but if you do have that big plug, i would just probably drop the spare so you can look at the wire loom that goes to that tailgate plug to see if they just simply replaced the wires to run it to where it is now which means if they did, they probably did a ****** job reconnecting the wires. Hopefully they didn’t use butt-splice connectors. I could see that causing an ohm problem.

Can you take a PIC from underneath looking at the back of the cam... or just inspect it for corrosion

This may have went to a different monitor ? Probably just a cheap aftermarket kit to a separate monitor and not the radio .
Pull the radio and see if sockets #31 ,32 ,33 are populated . If not the camera is not wired to the radio [emoji106]

Yes I have the electric tailgate lock. My truck is a 2015. I will try to get to the current camera set up tomorrow or Sunday. I'll be sure to take pics and keep you all in the loop! I gotta check again but I think I got the yellow RCA plug up behind my dash.
More to follow !!!
I really appreciate all of the replies!

When I first installed my aftermarket camera and enabled it with alfaodb I kept getting the same error. All connections were tight and I was losing my mind for about 30 min. Then I decided to put the car in reverse and rotate/wiggle the yellow rca and lo and behold and image popped up then disappeared then popped up again. I found a position with an image and just quadruple taped it and I haven’t had an issue since. All I’m saying is your connection may just be loose, try manipulating it while in reverse.

I got the oem 8.4...
I went ahead and yanked out the old crap after I chased wires and found cooked wires at the fire wall.

I dunno, if it were me personally, I’d probably delete it. I mean sure, that camera’s nice for hitching up to a trailer, or for us 4th-Gen’ers who don’t have that fancy tailgate ajar warning like the new ones do, it is nice to use as a reference to make sure you closed your tailgate after you left somewhere but the backup camera was not a selling point for me. Too bad there’s not a way to kill it from coming on all the time when backing up unless you want it to.......or is there? Fellow Moparians? Is there a way to disable the reverse trigger?

Corneileous,

Appreciate the link. I'll look into it.

I guess now it's the old decision of, "do I spend $300 to get back what I thought I had", cuz you seem to be able to wire it in no time.
