I have a 2018 HD 2500 with a 6.4. I noticed a whine coming from what I think is the rear axle. Truck only has 5900 miles on it. I took it back into the dealer to get a couple recalls done (PCM re-flash and passenger restraint issue). I had them look into the whine issue as well.

As usual, they initially said they didn't hear the whine. After pushing them a little (and gettin the dumb-ass tech to turn the dam radio off), they heard it. Their first attempt to fix this is to put an additive in the rear axle. Told me to drive it a couple hundred miles to see if that helps. We'll see.

Anyone else have this whine issue?

Sublime: That Blows!
I will admit: I have never heard any (Noise) from my 11.5". (Not saying I took time to Listen).
After my first 641 mile towing adventure with 12K lb enclosed trailer @ 1750 miles.

She had 27 miles on the OD when I drove her off the lot.

I drained the FF gear oil and poured in RL 75W-90.
(Just to flush the break-in wear metals out).
RL already has the friction additive added even though the word is the 11.5" with anti-slip does not require it.

My rant did not help with your issue I know. I do apologize!

Your whine must be really loud to even notice over the motor and other noise coming from the truck.

Good Luck with a fix for this issue.
Keep Us Up to Date.

Most diff additives are to stop chatter of clutch packs. These diffs use no clutch packs. the are a copy of a detroit truetrac using helical gears to transfer power from a wheel that is spinning to a wheel that has traction.

Unless they used a thickening additive to quiet the noise im fairly certain that what they put in will not quiet the noise.

Keep us posted. My OEM gears were very quiet

Same here. It's most notable when you get off the throttle at 70. It really gets noisy just as you pass below 60.

My 2016 2500 with the 6.4 I bought brand new had a whine in it from about 800 miles on until I finally traded it at 17K on it because I couldnt stand it any more. It should not make noise, period. If it makes noise, something is wrong in the set up. No it shouldnt be noisier because it is a big heavy duty diff, no it shoulfnt be noiser because of the bearings they use, no it shouldnt be noiser because they all do that (all excuses I got from 2 different dealers after trying to get it rectified for 15K miles) The only permanent fix is to find the source and have it fixed. Changing Gear weight didnt fix it, trying additives didnt fix it. Some folks have had to have the entire rear axle replaced, others have gotten lucky when they replaced just the ring and pinion.( under warranty) IF you can get Ram to do anything. Ram has an issue with these things. When I bought my 18 cummins, I test drove 5 I think, and only 2 didnt make the noise, and those were brand new trucks with less than 100 miles on them. Very sad.

what noises did you experience, and did you experience any strange behavior or driving characteristics along with the noise?

I had a whine on acceleration, deceleration, heck even in neutral. In the 60-75 range off and on. The dang Ram delaerships wouldnt even pull the diff cover to investigate and I ended up paying an independent garage 250 bucks to measure backlash, piniion depth etc and change the fluid. I dont think it was in danger of failing though, but it got to the point it drove me nuts and techs heard it, and service manager heard it and just wasnt doing anything about it. I think a good dealer can make the situation better in that situation.

The backlash likely wasn't set properly at the factory. They can take the rear diff cover off, mark the gears with a wax pen, turn them and see where they mesh. If they are off and they try to set again after too many miles, it probably won't work and you will need a new ring and pinion. My 3.21's are completely silent.

My backlash was measured and I was sent a video of them doing it, it was right in the middle of the range, that was with about 6K on it at the time I think. I suspect / Suspected pinion. I also wonder about location of dealership, for instance the dealerships near me are right off a major interstate and they are test driven there, so taking abrand new truck and immedaitly flooring it down the interstate to see what it will do by a few different drivers test driving it isn;t necessarily the best way to break in a new diff either.

My ring & pinion had to be changed at 18K miles. It was getting noisier every week. At 70mph it was screaming. One dealership refused to open a ticket but another fixed it without question. A local AAM axle shop told me to not use the synthetic base oils and just stick with conventional petroleum based oils, plus use the heavier weight 75-140W. If the shop is pushing back on fixing it I'd take my business elsewhere.

I'm noticing a whine noise on mine but it only does it in 6th gear. If I manually shift to 5th, its gone. I currently have just over 10k miles and I think mine is in the transmission. I spoke with my dealership and they are more than happy to look into it, I just need to make some time to leave it with them.

Nothing out of the ordinary at all. The noise just became more noticeable as time went on.

Nothing further to say at this point. At least not yet. I'll be headed back to the dealer after New Years. The whine isn't getting better. I figured the additive was a first step. I sure hope they will get this resolved. I've owned several Dodge/Ram trucks over the years All I own is Mopar. Have loved them all. And I love this truck, all except that whine.

I'll post up again after the first with any updates.
