I’m also thinking about swapping out the transmission for an 8 speed. Are there businesses out there that do refurbished or should I bit the bullet and go to dodge?

Man you gotta learn to give more info,are you now referring to a 8 speed transmission,or are you still referring to the engine.
If transmission you can pick up fairly low milege used truck 8 speeds pretty well anywhere. A new one is gonna rock your boat,and i wouldn't do a factory reman 8 speed,as Dodge farms them out to the cheapest rebuilder who bids on the contract.

Don't be scared to pass out more info,instead of assuming we'll know. You haven't even told us if its a 2X4 or 4X4,don't be shy dude,the more info you provide the better the answers will be
Pick up a low milege used 8 speed,they aren't hard to find.
If your truck is a 4X4 you'll need the 8 speed from a 4X4 as the 2 wheel drives use a differant tailshaft and output shaft,and the transmission has to be completely disassembled to change them,same goes if your trucks 2 wheel drive get the 8 speed from a 2 wheel drive truck
