Why do folks get mad about recalls? I've seen posts here saying "I'll never buy another Ram, too many recalls" and the such. I've had 5 or 6 recalls done since I bought my truck a bit over 2 years ago, the last 2 were done last week. Personally, I think it's great Ram is fixing this stuff. So it puzzles me why some folks take it as a negative.

Personally I don’t enjoy going to the dealership. Drop it off or wait for hours to get it done. Can’t think of any pleasant experiences other than leaving the dealership. A whole day spent at minimum.

Meh. My 2020 2500 has had 1 recall to adjust the tailgate latch. Even then, I'm taking the thing to the dealer for oil changes and tire rotations anyways. Make appointment, drop off, pick up when done. I waited once and it was only about 45 minutes.

Recalls happen to nearly every model with every brand.

Recalls are common practice across every brand. I don't think any of us enjoy going to the dealership but I'd rather see them acknowledge and fix a problem than try to ignore it.

Have had (3) recalls done and (1) TSB that I forced done since Aug 2018. Hey, PITA but if gets done, item or safety defect fixed, not a bad deal actually.

But if the Dealership is a F UBAR place, than that is different.

I did not used to mind recalls. However, since i had to get my tailgate latch adjusted 3 times by the dealer, I hate them now.

Yeah, that's a good point. My dealer is quick to get me in and out and has yet to mess up anything or need repeat trips for the same thing. Probably colors my perspective somewhat.

Good that the recalls are being done. Bad that they are necessary.

Vehicles are exceedingly complicated as it is and they only get more so with each successive generation. The more complicated they are the more failure-prone they are and the less work your average owner can do himself.

Yeah my 19 is in the realm of the ABS Software Notice which I got and threw in a pile on my rollup desk. Not see me running out anywhere to let dem dudes play with the programming., Every time they go in to the ECU/BCM, they fix 2 things and F-ubar up something else, then when I question them, they run some line of BS at me and just flat out lie. I worked a lot of years talking to PPL as part of my profession and my BS meter on the back of my neck starts ringing bells when I hear BS. Lying to me gets my tailfeathers in an uproar real quik, specially when they try to butter up yer backside with BS about this and that (I may have done a lil auto stuff back when I was a kid; U can throw all the electronic stuff to adjust do stuff, but simple mechanics on stuff does not change, just gets complicated).

Heck lying to me is worse than: "Hurry up and Wait" (Military type appreciate that phrase).

CAVEAT: My SA at my dealership (not local) will run line of BS to me in front of PPL cause of policy/politics, than we talk on the side and he gives me the real deal.

Yeah, all the computer stuff just got me bypassed. The days of a straight, phillips, pliers and a socket set just not work anymore. And do not forget the hammer, the ole Persuader and anger management tool.

I do not get mad.

However, I believe numerous safety recalls by a manufacturer (Stelantis topped the charts in 2024) is a combination of poor quality, poor design and poor manufacturing.

I often wonder what other hidden defects a vehicle has, but since it is not safety related, the owner will be left to deal with the problem down the road.

And on a related topic - how about safety recalls where it takes a year or more for the manufacturer to provide the part for the repair?

Well, typically a car manufacturer doesn't make a lot of the ancillary components that are recalled.

They outsource them to a third party who also likely has a multitude of other customers.

So first, they have to identify through testing WHAT the actual problem is. Then engineer, design, and validate a solution (often times in conjunction with the manufacturer of the failed component). Then prototype the solution and test the fix. Then cut a PO to the outsource manufacturer to start production. If that mfg purchases manufactured assemblies that go into theirs, they have to repeat the steps above before they get that component. The mfg has to source materials, schedule time onto the production lines, ship, etc...

It all takes time and the more complex, the longer it takes.

The reality of today is that we the consumer want more and more creature comforts. Those add complexity. Then we want it cheap, and we want it fast. Then when it breaks we want it fixed immediately. There is a saying in manufacturing. If you want it to be good, it won't be cheap nor fast. If you want it cheap and fast, it won't be good.

I've torn down and rebuilt some engines in my day. Father-in-law was a mechanic in his youth and Grandpa retired as shop foreman at the local Chevy dealer. Between the three of us we are pretty good with figuring things out, but this computer stuff is on another level.

I'd rather pay someone to turn the wrench than do it myself these days, just because I don't have a big garage, lift and all the specialty tools. Sad that's what it has come to.
