one of my local dealers has a killer parts department. They sell oem at dealer cost.

I’m wondering if anyone knows what they’d charge to install the remote start?

Has anyone had a dealer do this?

An OEM remote start is near a grand. It comes with two additional fobs that have the remote button on them.

I think install is 2 hours.

my truck is a 17 so take what i say with a grain of salt, but i bought my remote start kit from the dealer for around 375, installed it myself in an hour, and had them flash the truck for another 125.

It varies a bit on the model year, but the remote start kit for my truck was a new hood latch with an open/close sensor, and two new key fobs.

i dont want to know what they would have charged me to install, but after seeing how easy it was to swap the hood latch and pin the harness, nearly any price would have been too much.

Book rate for labor is 3 hours, so they can't charge more than that. Most dealers are $125-135 per hour on labor, so 3x that plus whatever the kit costs you. Most year kit are avail from $225-260 or so line, saving you a bit from "typical" dealer prices.

In some cases (at least in my 2016), it also involves pulling the headliner and adding/replacing the remote antenna, plus replacing the RF hub behind the seat, so it does add up to a bit of work. Then of course there's the flashing, and programming of keyfobs. I think with AlfaOBD you can program keys now but not sure about the remote start code flash itself.

I've considered doing the install bits myself, but oddly enough my dealer ran my VIN and says my truck won't accept the mopar remote start, although I don't really understand why. In fact the more I think about it I want to go back and pester them about it.

Otherwise, I'd have to go with the DBAL solution linked earlier, or the FlashLogic which is basically the same sort of T-Harness install.

Blows my mind on what the book rate for labor is on these kits. Thinking back when I installed mine I really don't think it took me much over an hour to install to install the kit (eBay new $100/plus shipping). If I had the cojones at the time to finish the install by programming with AlfaOBD, I'm pretty sure I could've done it in less than two total work time. It may be different for other year models but knowing my dealer, it would've take them the entire billable time.

Headliner was easy enough and I didn't pull anything but the corner down (being careful of course). Here is the kit I got...

Not sure why yours couldn't have remote start. Mine is a 16' Express

Everything written above is correct. The kit will run you around $375. You will need to lower the headliner and swap modules, run a cable and swap an antenna. Removing the rear seat must be done to get to all of this. Also there’s the hood latch that needs to be replaced. I did all the work but left the old module hooked up and drove it to the dealer and them flash the code.

I can’t remember which vehicle imobilizer you have to have to do this? That the only reason I know of that you can’t add it.

LOL I was just replying to you on this... Dang that was a good deal :). That kit is 82214877, looks like they replaced it with 82214877AB now for 2016's, although I have no idea what is different.

This is the install guide I'm going by, I haven't actually seen the process...

Yeah, I'm not really sure either in the difference. At the price I paid, I don't really care too much. Lol

My install went exactly as @magician stated above your post. I didn't actually remove my rear seat totally from the truck but just slid it forward out of the way. I installed everything but left my old hub connected and taped above the new one.

Edit: The hardest part was pinning the new wire in. Removing the connector on mine was a PIA.

Says must have GXX although not sure where to find those codes... those codes are not on my window or build sheet. Window sticker does say Sentry Key Theft Deterrent System, which is what I thought GXX was, but maybe there are different versions...

I also don't have the pre-wired harness at the hood latch, but that's not uncommon i've read.

That I could not tell you. When I got mine I sent the vendor my VIN and he confirmed it would work.

Actually that is good idea, I will find listing that requires VIN and send mine to see if they say something different than my local.

One other thing to keep in mind is some dealers don’t want to do these installs period and others want to do them all themselves and not allow the owners to do hands on stuff. I was also told that Chrysler now is leaning towards not adding codes if the vehicle didn’t come originally equipped? This info came from more than one dealer source but so far in my case it hasn’t been an issue except for the homelink on my RAM? For some reason adding that code to my truck is a big no no?

Yeah it's interesting b/c I was there asking them about an install price, ie full install. She (service advisor) called someone in the back and they came back with VIN not compatable. Not sure if she called parts or some other dept.

I got a response from the ebay dealer/seller (SteveWhiteMotors) - they didn't specifically say my vin was compatible, but did link me to the kit I needed to buy. Which was the same listing I used to ask about the VIN lol. So I don't know if that means they are saying my VIN will work, or if they are just pointing me to the 2016 kit.

I think to get this sorted I'm going to have to go back to my dealer and find out why they say my VIN is not compatible. Or even call the other RAM dealer across town and see what they say.
