2021 1500 Laramie with what I assume is the Night Edition package - satin black wheels, black logos, black grille.

I bought it used in April. The previous owner was meticulous about maintenance like oil changes (I have the carfax showing it) but did a terrible job keeping the truck clean. Apparently this guy lived on a gravel road next to a tar pit, because I had a time touching up the various nicks and scratches as well as removing tar from the truck. I had to scour the interior. But its all 100 times better now than when I got the truck.

But the rims have some slight oxidation on them. How should I go about removing this? My first though was to hand compound and polish them. But I figured I'd ask the experts here first.

I'd say sacrifice them as winter tires but you don't get winter,so compound polishing and maybe ceramic coating them is the way to go,as long as it's not down to bare aluminum.I repainted and coated a set on my last ram and they turned out great and we get severe winter conditions up here.it's tedious, but not difficult to diy.

Yeah, we don't get much of a winter down here. The rare times we get snow, its not enough for them to salt the roads. I'm not even sure if our DOT even has the material/equipment to salt the roads.

That's what I figured. Thanks.

The oxidation is mainly inside the spokes of the wheels.

Can’t really see it from a couple of feet back.

My guess is 1 of two things. Either it got something on the wheels. Or someone sprayed it with something while the wheels were hot. It could have been driven through a drive through car wash for example after a 60 mile trip and got a package that included the wheels being cleaned. Since the wheels themselves are not faded out and it just being the inside the spokes. Your best bet since I can’t sit there and test a bunch of my stuff, would be to buy this and use it. It is the only thing that I know that will remove stains from satin black wheels and not polish them in the process. It is not expensive either. You may have to work it hard depending on what it is, but that should remove it.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I posted this same question on a detailing Facebook group. Their thought was the same as yours - not oxidation but some sort of chemical on the wheels. They suggested DIY Detail All Clean, or maybe using a water spot remover.

Thoughts on that?

You could try an All clean of some sort but that most likely won’t do it. You stand a slim chance. Water Spot Remover the only one I would suggest if you wanted to go that route is Undrdog WSP, but again that’s a 50/50 gamble.

I’m just thinking of least invasive first, if that makes sense.
I completely agree. American Detailer Garage F bomb diluted to 1:10 is a good start. Even if it doesn’t work it does so much more. I just bought the 5 gallon of it. It works wonders for cleaning engines and most wheels and tires. I would not use them on any high end vehicle or a vehicle with carbon ceramic brakes or brembos, but you don’t have to worry about that lol. Then you could got to UD WSP and then last resort would be Mckee’s Let me look into the Carpro stuff and see what they have. If not I can call Corey and see what he recommends from them. They are a blended company of Some of the greatest minds to have ever work in the car product line. Getting back on track. What to try now.

F bomb Very American company.

WSP is IMO the best waterspot remover out there. Very American company. Local to me. I know the owner Joel very well.

I have kind of shifted my product line from Carpro 100% to Shine Supply. I still have and use a lot of Carpro, but when you aren’t doing half million-million + cars everyday there is no need in it. I will try and figure out what they have and if they have anything new. If nothing else I will call Corey this week for you.

I appreciate your help with this. I probably won’t be able to really tackle these wheels until after the new year. And after that, depending on weather.

I made a call late yesterday to Corey and his suggestion with not knowing exactly what is on the wheel would be to either try their iron x paste or sticky with what I said the Mckees. Without us being there to mess with it, it’s just a guessing game. I know I could get it off the wheels if you were closer, but let me know what you try and if it works.

Thanks again. I'll update you once I get a chance to tackle this.
Sorry I forgot to link the iron x paste in my last post. Just in case you decide to try it.
