Anyone else experience this? First time with this truck I’ve had the opportunity to take a run down the interstate. I get a rumbling or resonance coming in around 78-82 mph. Mostly noticeable when on the gas or steady cruise. If I go faster it goes away. I don’t hear it coasting down through that range from higher speeds. Don’t feel any vibrations.

It is loud enough to get my attention. And irritating enough I don’t want to hear it on a long day’s drive.

I’m concerned it’ll be difficult to get a dealer in FL where I am now to take a complaint seriously, or even diagnose it, since the speed limit is 70 (which of course everyone ignores). Later in the summer I’ll be out west where 80 is the posted speed, maybe I’ll have better results if I take it to a dealer in say, Texas?

Any other experiences out there to help in identifying the sound, or advice on how to get it addressed is certainly appreciated!

The truck is still 100% stock PW, 2500 miles. 6.4 and 4.10 of course.

There are certain things I do to isolate a noise in a customers vehicle. One of the first things I do in a new truck is go through the whole suspension and body/undercarriage and torque all of the nuts and bolts.

Next, I try to determine if the noise is not only related to vehicle speed but also to engine RPM and or a certain gear in the trans.

While driving on the interstate at the speed you can hear the noise downshift the trans from 6th to 5th and see if the noise remains or if the pitch changes.

Next, I would rotate the tires in an
X-pattern to determine if the noise is tire related.

Then, I would remove the front
prop-shaft to isolate the front diff from the rest of the drivetrain.

These are things that any dealer can do for you. I live in Texas where the speed limits are 70-75mph and I'll drive a customers car just like them to duplicate a noise.

Look into doing a Solo Performance Exhaust System
The solo delete kit will eliminate that resonating drone sound.
I've got 3 videos on YouTube of cold and warm idles and one driving down the highway.
Search for my name
Claud McBroom
Solo Exhaust delete.
I still have the resonator on it.

Drive down the road and maulaly put it into 6th or 8th if you have a 2019. See if it goes away. If it does it’s your mds

Part of the video is with it off and part with it kicked on. I did that to prove the no drone.
Forgive me for the low volume of the video. I didn't know till I posted it. I guess I'll check the record volume and redo it.

Does the Resonator delete with turn down sound much louder than stock? I had a pipe made to replace the muffler and left the resonator and pipe, sounds pretty good I think but get some "rack" under load and higher RPM.
The solo delete takes out the muffler and reuse is the resonator. Pretty loud in comparison to stock. Your neighbors know when you’re going to work.
Now all I did was takeoff the resonator and pipe completely from the backside of the muffler and cut it off where it comes down on the bend and reuse that short piece to make a down pipe. I bought zero parts. And I found it to be a perfect middle ground. Just enough sound that I can hear it when I remote start from inside my house but quite enough that those that are sleeping aren’t bothered.

Some people get the muffler and the resonator mixed up. The muffler is twice the length and it is closest to the engine. The resonator is back by the spare tire ( for those of you that don’t know. ) I accidentally had @Breaker Alex take off the wrong thing in a miss-post last year.

if it is mds, then shift to 8th gear using the - on the gear selector on the steering wheel then cruse at 80mph and report back.

I can’t stand mds. I’m very light with throttle and it drives me insane when I drive my wife’s truck. She don’t ever feel it lol. That little vibration and rumble hits every nerve of mine :banghead:

That’s funny. Seems to bother a bunch here on this form. I don’t have a problem or feel vibration that y’all feel. I have had a few manual transmissions and can relate it to my college days when I want to save gas, so I would put my 5spd in 5th at like 30mph and have no power. Haha. Now I drive it like I stole it.

Thank you all for the suggestions and especially @Fast69Mopar for an excellent elimination process spelled out. I did some assessment on the drive back this afternoon.

No change in sound between gears. Sounds the same in 8th @2400 rpm and 7th @2900. So I think that rules out engine and exhaust.

There’s no MDS happening at 80. At least not in my truck.

I was mistaken it’s not present at higher speeds. The pitch and volume change, but there’s still something happening at 90.

I’ll spend some quality time underneath checking for torque on fasteners, and rotate tires. I’m thinking now maybe tires, or possibly even something drumming in the wind.

What about the active noise cancellation? I’m thinking should find out how to disable that both so I can rule out a malfunction as a cause, and so it’s not interfering with my attempts to identify a noise source.

Those sit right under your feet on both sides connected to the frame

I have read about a fella having noise issues with the noise cancellation setup. Was very troublesome. Took the dealer a LONG time to trial and error that one.

Hi Travelin Ram,

If you do move forward with your dealer on this, please know that I am more than happy to get a case escalated on your behalf to a specialist who can provide you with an additional layer of support for that process. Our team is always just a PM away!

I had a skid plate make a similar noise on my 1500 - well not the plate itself as being loose but rather the air rushing over it at high speed. Unbolted and removed and the sound went away.

My new 2020 PW is experiencing this same issue. Pick it up late last week and I have never had this issue in my 3500 CTD or 5.7 1500. Taking it back to dealer to see what they say. 120 miles on od.

I’m the same way. Rarely notice it because I’m either on a Bluetooth call, got the radio up loud or have overdrives locked out to tow/hot rod(“cleaning out the carburetor”).
