Hello everyone, I’m new here and I’m trying to help my niece. She has a 2013 Ram Sport 4wd with a 65RFE transmission. Currently there are two problems and I’m wondering if they are related. The truck rolled away backwards with it supposedly in park and there is a strange and loud clicking sound that randomly comes from the area of the WIN module. Today she was able to get a video of the clicking which occurred with it running and in park after having been driven for about 20 minutes. Does anyone have a clues? I asked her if she could shift out of park with the key off and she said that yes, sometimes she can. So is this all because of a bad WIN module? Or something else?
Here is a video of the sound!

I would guess the parking pawl is not fully engaging in Park from the sound you describe. But I don’t have any knowledge of how the transmission gear changes are controlled in that model truck - mechanical linkage or electronic solenoids, etc. Mine, a 23 model with the rotary dial, is obviously electronic. Older models with mechanical linkage could be adjusted but I’m not sure how many years or even decades ago that was the case with RAM.

Thanks. Yes it’s a 6 speed with the conventional shifter in the center console. But the clicking sounds in the video are like one every second through the 16 second video. But not evenly spaced. Kind of like the sound of locking and unlocking the doors if a child was playing with it. And she says it sounds like it’s coming from the ignition switch. I really need for everyone to see and hear this video but how do I do that? At this point I’m more concerned with the source of the sounds than the rollaway issue. She now applies the parking/ emergency brake every time.

is your video on a file? if so, just click on the "attach file" on the bottom left of your post, search your file, select it, then it should show up in your post.

i remember that clicking sound when i heard people put their cars in park while it was moving, maybe the same? But, as Bigskyroadglide said, maybe a transmission place can adjust the linkage so that it's properly in Park

Markabby I tried to attach it, but it seems to only allow pictures because the video files are grayed out.

Also Markabby, this video was taken when she was parked with engine running waiting to pick up her child from school. Trans in park, hand off of the shifter. And the noise is LOUD.
Very strange!

Thanks David H, I was wondering if I would have to go that route. So videos aren’t allowed to be attached here then?

The sound you posted sounds like a relay clicking off and on just like the door lock mechanism. Sounds electronic not mechanical

You should check for codes, in the various control modules. If the truck goes in gear and moves forward and backwards as designed then the noise is probably unrelated to the transmission.

You should be setting the parking brake every time you park anyway. With that shifter as well as the eight speed the procedure recommend to my understanding is stop where you intend to park, set parking brake then engage park by shifting the lever or turning the dial. It's easier on the parking pawl and limits damage from over torturing when taking it out of gear.

Thanks Bigsky, I’ll check codes with my BlueDriver when I see her again. I’ll be honest I’ve never set the brake before shifting to Park in my own vehicles but I see how it makes sense. I’ll have to try to teach this old dog a new trick!

Okay Guys, I have the truck today and scanned all modules with a BlueDriver. No codes except for a right rear turn signal. Then I discovered that when you go to shift out of park with the engine running and foot on brake I hear a very similar sound and it comes from the ignition switch (WIN module) every time you move the shift to the side.
I took a video.
Is this a normal sound in this vehicle? Thoughts anyone?

The noise you are hearing has to do with the Release for your shifter when you press the brake. I feel like there was a recall for it put your vin here to see recalls. Also have someone stand behind truck and see if your brake lights are working had switch go bad also controls the release for your shifter.

Thanks JWS but I’ve already checked for recalls. I’ll check the brake lights but it does shift out of park just fine.

Also JWS the sound that the lock solenoid makes is quieter and comes from the console by the shifter. This other sound is louder and comes from the ignition switch when moving the shifter to the right.

OK, abit of confusion here.

2009 - 2012 Dodge Ram 1500s had the setup that is seen in the videos.
beginning in July, August,or September of 2012 ..
Every Ram 1500 that rolled off the assembly line, had the ROTARY Shifter & 8 Speed ZF Transmission
.....................................................

Now on the other hand, the 2500 though the 5500 Models did not switch over to the 8 Speed ZF Transmission.

Therefore, i have to think that the videos show a Heavy Duty model ????

Who ever told you that is full of $h!t,you could still get the 6 speed RFE in a 1500 well after that, and in Canada it was still available all the way up to 2019
