Howdy, everyone. Just a quick Q from someone who isn't as familiar with the Dodge truck as he is with their Ford and Chevy counterparts.

I've heard from several owners of the 2nd gen 1500 Ram that the transmission was a major headache to them. Was this true for the manual tranny as much as it was for the auto one?

I have a friend who wants to unload a 2nd Gen 1500 Ram, with a manual tranny, on me, which is why I'm asking.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 99 Dodge 2500 4x4 with a 5 speed manual. with 90,000 original miles I have had no issues with my manual. I believe the manuals use a special gear oil because of the sycro's are carbon fiber. I can shift mine without a clutch both up an down, smooth running tranny I think.

You say 2nd gen. If it's a 1500 it should be a NV4500, great trans. Not to be confused with an NV4500HD but have more than 300K on one of the trucks I work on with no problems (restate that as minimal problems) considering the truck only comes in for service when it is broke.. 300K+

They're not bad at all. Nobody takes care of them or services them though and when they go bad or have issues they wonder what the hell happened. The equivalent of not changing engine oil then complaining they need a new engine.

They're not carbon fiber. Just takes a regular gear oil. They also had issues with the 5th gear nut backing off. Easy fix though.

1500 never came with a nv4500 trans. 318s and 3.9s had the option of an nv3500 but not 4500. 360 was never optioned in a 1500 with a manual. 2500/3500 trucks could get the 360 with an nv4500. The nv4500HD was behind the diesel/v10 trucks.
