it's all relative to your conditions first and tire choice/condition would have a factor, but I cannot see what would be any different with modern trucks that if you needed weight added in the bed in the past with an older truck then it would be most likely needed or wanted with a newer truck in the same conditions.

I put 4 or 5 bags from Lowe's in mine. I also have a 45gal. aux tank that I keep full in the winter for weight. The sand will only help a little but for just a few bucks from Lowe's it's worth it. Can also help if you or someone else is stuck to spread for traction.

With my old single cab, long bed I just kept an extra spare in the bed. This quad, short bed seems a little light in the back end. Full sized spare and at least one bag of grit. Wife's AWD SUVs always have had a bag of grit, mostly to get her out of trouble just in case.

Why use sandbags….when Water-Softener Salt bags have hendles..?? :jester:

(My 1951 Ford P/U had a rear bumper made from a 5’ piece of RailRoad Rail.
… I personally Never had a problem with rear-end weight…. or accidentally backing into anything.)

It's not going to hurt anything, and you can get yourself out of some messes by throwing down sand (or kitty litter) to get some extra grit on the surface you're stuck on.

Kitty litter has saved me in snow more than once when I was driving the ultimate all-weather-all-terrain vehicle (4th Gen Camaro....)

Nothing wrong with lil extra weight in bed of truck since these rear ends so light. If I needed to which I don’t I would throw hay bales in rear but TBH not needed here unless another freak storm like 2021 and it is currently 79F lol.

What is this "snow" that you're all talking about? ;)

Im in the works of applying for my retirement visa in Costa Rica :headbang:

Kenuckistan is now an epic ******** and Im looking forward to leaving it.

Best Part is after 3 years I can burn my Canadian passport and become a full time resident . **** this country.

Im actually quite sad that the US dosent offer this. As I would love to export all my guns and live free like GOD intended in one of the great southern states.

I used to put 3 to 400 pounds of sand in bed of my 14 that was just rear drive and and drove through a number of 6 to 8 inch storms without an issue. I got a great laugh watching cars get stuck because they were using their bumper as a snow plow lifting their front drive wheels out of contact with the road. The 19 is 4x4 but so far has only been through a couple of minor snow events that I didn't bother putting anything in the bed.

There's no retirement visa, but if you can convince some Floridian chick (or dude, I guess, these days) to marry you...

I get 2k pounds of #9 stone in bed (tarp under it) and then shovel it into pot holes in our dirt road in spring. Can still carry stuff in bed if needed.

Lots of good advice here but here's my 2 cents and experience
We live near the Hudson Bay in Northern Canada so know lots about this topic. With snow rated tires on we'll maintained roads in winter with good driving habits.. no you do not need sand bags. But with that said having sand bags handy for extreme days is a great idea. For me on extreme days I put it in 4Hi because I'm using the bed of truck regularly and don't want sand bags in the way.
One thing I am thinking about is building cement filled containers that fit over the wheel wells for a smaller commuter truck that my wife uses and that way we still load and unload without loss of bed use
