Thanks a lot for all the advice guys.

I went by to take a look at the used engine today with (claimed) 10,000km on it. It does look to be in great shape, can still see the dealer stamp on it. Very little rust, hoses/conduit/etc do not look old and beat, oil was not fresh but nothing out of the ordinary. He gave me the VIN that it came off of which I suppose may or may not be valid.

So that is option #1, $4000 bucks.

Option #2 he said he had an engine coming in next week that was damaged during factory loading and is essentially brand new, for $4500 bucks.

Option #3 is a remanufactured engine for $5000 bucks. This comes with a 3 year warranty, where the above two used ones are 90 days. I believe he said this is 405hp with updated cams and oil pump, not that I particularly need any more power.

He wants $2100 +fluids to install any of them which seems pretty reasonable, I'll be honest I think I'll get better service here than the dealer.

The difference in price is really not a (big) factor for me, $1000 difference isn't a deal breaker either way. So hard to decide when any of the options could lead to ongoing engine trouble. I am leaning towards the remanufactured engine because of the 3 year warranty, although I generally think warranties are a racket tbh.

Any final words of wisdom before I pull the trigger tomorrow?

Yeah warranties are a crap shoot. There is so much fine print. Stupid stuff like "well we can't cover that... it's a wear item". I would think that factory blemish would have a warranty. There is just probably some exterior things that got damaged that you won't be using anyway cause they will re-use the existing parts on your truck. I personally would want to find out more about that engine. Maybe just the oil pan or intake got crushed. Those kind of parts could be swapped over real easy & then you would have a brand new factory engine. Probablt worth looking into.

Kind of concerning that the engine failed this early. Has it had a hard life?

Hey everyone,

Was cruising on the highway on the weekend when my 2014 2500 suddenly started making some crazy noises and died. It wouldn't turn over so I had it towed to the dealer. The diagnosis: engine won't crank and needs replacing, catastrophic failure. I got a few different quotes from them (Canadian $): $13000 for a new engine, $11000 for a reman or a used one they found with 117,000km on it which would run me $10000 all said and done.

This is my first time around with an engine replacement, so looking for advice. The engine remanufacturers seem to advertise their engines are better than factory. I found a shop locally that has several used engines which could save me near half the price, $4200 CAD (plus install for about $7500 total) for an engine with only 10,000km on it for instance. While this sounds like a much better deal, I have no idea where the engine came from and whether or not they're full of it.

Existing engine is the factory 5.7L.

Looking for advice on how to proceed. Is buying a used engine with low mileage that risky? Would the dealer test it for me etc? Or should I just go with a new engine to be sure not to have future issues.

Thanks!
Sorry to hear about the dead engine. You're about right on the prices. We own an RV park and have had a few customers in that had that problem with diesels that went a little over 20k. A good reman with the warranty is a pretty safe bet over a new, and a better price. A used with low miles is OK if you know the history, but part of the price of the others is the warranty. Good luck with the replacement.

First decided if your 6 year old truck is worth spending that kind of money on.

If it is I would try to find a good used one. Many mass rebuilt engines are a crapshoot as to whether you get a good one or not.

See it you can find a low mile Ram that was crashed and is being parted out first. That way you have some idea of the miles.

Used engines that are already pulled out of a vehicle have unknown miles no matter what they tell you.

$3000.00 labor to put in an engine seems really high, is this a dealer?

I would think an experienced tech could crank this out in 8 to 12 hours. Even at 16 hours the labor rate they are quoting you is $187.50 per hour.
Depending on the setup, it may require lifting the cab from the frame.

I think it is worth putting a new engine into. Similar replacement used is about $30,000 cad if I could find a good deal.

I believe labour was $2900 and $600 in misc parts. Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it.

In looking for a low mileage used engine, are all of the 2009-2018 year 5.7's interchangeable?

When I had my 5.3 replaced because of their shabby lifters, I went new because the truck itself was primo. New motor has 3yr/36 month warranty. Cost was 10k including new radiator. Gave truck to son and bought a Ram, lol

I had the engine in my 2014 Outdoorsman with 5.7 replaced under extended warranty. The dealer got $2,800 US for the labor. The engine I received was used with 90k miles on it, my original engine had 104k on it when it went. The used engine came with a 2 yr unlimited mileage warranty.

Wow! I didn't realize that the 5.7's were crapping out that quick. Thought most of them were getting 200k+

If it were my truck I would put the no mileage used motor in it, then buy an extended warranty from the shop that installs it, most reputable warranty companies are eager to get your business and the shop that installs the engine might give you a good deal on motor and warranty if purchased at the same time. The reman engine warranty is good, but the price of the engine plus the included warranty probably isn't worth the expense considering the age and mileage of your particular truck. If you replace the engine with one that costs $10k or more, then wreck the truck a week later, the insurance company isn't going to pay you $10k you just spent, get the best deal you can and invest in a good warranty and enjoy your truck! Just my two cents....

Yeah I would take the loading accident new used motor, that makes the most sense to me. I can understand the appeal of a warranty for only 500 more bucks but what do you actually get out of these types of warranty its hard to say sometimes. Maybe the terms are really good I dont know.

I would wonder , anyone ever look inside your motor to see what happened?
I don't think I would spend 10K on a motor with 100KM on it , It may run for yrs, or not.
I think the guy pulling the wenches is more importuned than the name on the building I Sask. I would phone SGI savage yard to see what they had r a good low mileage motor. My old truck would have been a good one , bit older,2009 Laramie rear ended, 50k on it that was in 2014

If it were me and I wanted to put the money in the truck I would opt for a new engine or a remanufactured engine. If money is no object then by all means go with the new. Remanufactured engines from a reputable company are excellent engines. Use an old shop with a good reputation for the install. Stay away from the dealer. Never rebuild a seized engine because the heat has probably warped the block. I have purchased used engines and trannys -- never got a good one as most were worn out.

Sorry to hear, big pain. You should keep the truck, a new 2500 is a huge financial hit. I just seized up as well, 2007 5.7, on highway, lost oil pressure, check gauges and done. 219K miles, it was ticking and MDS giving me trouble for last 10K. Cheater bar on the crank and I can’t turn it.

Keep us posted on where you find motor source, I see a few reman places who quote 2-3K USD, some with and without core and 5 year unlimited warranty here in the states and have to put it in myself as I can barely afford the gas anyway, you could probably save the 90-140 per hour if you bang heads with it for a day or too.

Jasper engines..... hands down. I've used them through the years for transmissions, differentials, and engines... (professionally) And NEVER had an issue.... the workers are the company owners.
