my rams engine light turned on at 5600 miles. it couldn't have come at a worst time. i have a 4 day trip to california this friday. should i be okay if nothing seems out of the ordinary as of this morning, or not drive it there? i wonder if i should expect a rental from the dealer, this is a trip planned over 2 months ago.

Check the code. See what it is. If it's not a huge issue. Then it will be fine

Pick up a reader from auto parts store.. probably have a friend that has one you can borrow.. ask around.

But no one can answer that question w/o knowing why its on.

Could it be your gas cap is loose? I agree, find out the code and go from there.

O'Reilly will scan the code(s) for free, just stop in.

They'll even give you a printout of the code definition with a list of reported fixes.

Most auto parts stores have free code readers you can use, just swing by any auto parts store and check the code. Autozone, Advanced Auto, etc.

If it's running fine I would say you'll be alright. Call the dealer, explain your situation, and see if they can get it in to at least take a look at it.

Got code P0456 small leak
inOBD Code

P0456refers to
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) at different times performs various tests on the EVAP system. OBD II Enhanced EVAP systems are in place to keep fuel tank vapors from venting into the atmosphere, and instead purges them into the engine to be burned. Regular pressure tests are conducted by the PCM to monitor the sealed system for leaks.

So not good to go right?

I'd scan it, but if you can't I'd STILL drive it. Its very likely something small and may even reset itself while on trip.

I wouldn't think that would be bad? Sounds like emissions maybe? I'm no mechanic lol. Sorry. What they said when you did the test? Could it be loose gas cap? Lol

Did you by any chance fill up while truck running? From what I've found so far there's no major issue with that code and most of the time it's due to loose fuel cap

Small Evap leak will in no way affect your trip. Has nothing to do with the way the truck runs. It is just a leak in the emissions system that basically recycles gas fumes that evaporate in the tank. You are just fine.

Yep... sounds pretty minor and something to do with the ultra-sensitive emissions on newer trucks. If you didn't have O'reily reset the code maybe swing by and have them do that. This turns it off and it will only come back on if the issue recurs. Once a code is thrown the CEL light will remain on until it's reset, I believe.

I had one about 6 months ago that was something about a sensor in the cooling system. I reset it and it didn't come back until just recently then kept coming back on every couple days. Took it to the dealer and it just needed a new thermostat.

Have a good trip!
