Yeah, I haven't decided yet which way I'm gonna go on the tuner. I will have to before spring for sure. Gets pretty hot down here in Arkansas fast. I'm leaning towards Diablo but thinking about going ahead and getting the unlocked PCM and keeping mine. I was looking at the Trinity. Expensive I know but go big or go home right?? I'm gonna look at the I3 as well. Right now 60's day 40's at night the e-fan is doing fine. But come summer time she won't be able to keep up til I reset the "on" temp.

In the summer it actually does alright without the tune. The highest mine would get after deleting the shutters is about 212 stuck in traffic with the AC running and 195-200 or so on the highway (With a 190 T-Stat). The fan parameter helps the most in slow speed traffic from what I've noticed and conditions where you might not be running AC or defrost. Right now with it being cool enough I really don't even have to think about getting the fan to run unless I do get stuck in traffic and under 50F I actually through a code for shutter performance since the truck stays so cool.

So far mine is fine. Running 185 moving and goes up to about 195 idling, with defrost on. If i turn defrost off it goes up to 210 - 212. As high as 215. Fan comes on and cools it back down. I wonder though when the weather gets hot (95-105) and 100% humidity how it will act. I'm running 180 T-stat now. May need to go to 190 T-stat? I haven't thrown no codes yet.

I would stick with the 180. Finally stopped being lazy and got my recalls done today so I can order an unlocked PCM and flash it. Summers around here get up over 100 with 90%+ humidity and I had 0 problems with the 190. Once I get my unlocked PCM in I'll be swapping to one of my spare 180 T-Stats and getting a custom greene racing tune on there.

Yeah I got my recalls done a couple a weeks ago. You know anything about the Hemifever tune? I was thinking about that one. I'm ready to get an unlocked PCM! I been looking at the Dioblo Trinity with the PCM and keeping mine. Guess it don't matter, only got ten months of warranty left anyway. By the way your truck gotta jump seat or console? I got the jump seat and was wondering how hard it would be to put a console in.

I have friends in the HemiFever camp and I've talked to Sean before, seems like an alright guy with good tunes. I ended up going with Greene on my 6.4 Challenger a while back since that will more than likely get one of his cam packages eventually and I just stuck with him for doing the truck. If I could go back and do it over again I honestly would've gone with HPTuners over Diablo, but I already own an I3 for the Challenger and I'll be going that route again for the truck. The Trinity is nice if you want extra digital gauges and what not, but the I3 does the same core functionality (Tuning and Logging). I've got the console in mine, but I have seen one or two center console swaps before. It looks like it's a bit of work, but doable if you get all the parts.

Some people have said that running cooler is not always better. These discussions do exist on this forum, and recommend NOT getting the lower temperature thermostat.

Yeah I'm starting to agree. Maybe 180 is a little cool. I'm thinking maybe the 190 might be better. I still like the shutter delete and V-6 fan but it is running cool. The V-6 fan moves so much more air. I'm sure a tuner will help a bunch.

Don't worry about the 180 t-stat,the trucks go into closed loop mode at 160F. There is not really any downside to running the engine at 185F,oil temperatures still stay lots hot enough to cook off moisture, plus your 8 speed tranny is fed a little less heat from the coolent. The hotter your coolent runs, the hotter your tranny will also run,by product of Ram heating the tranny fluid by running engine coolent through the 8 speed transmissions heater assembly. There's a few guys running as low as a 160 t-stat with no issues,i run a 170 in my truck, and a 180 in my wifes totally stock 2016 Challenger with no issues from either vehicle, and i'm in Alberta, where we actually get cold, and the heaters in both vehicles still work great.

I run a 170* t-stat and no issues. Im tuned for it though. Also it didn't matter how low of a t-stat you go. Hemis will run at 185* no matter what. Even with no t-stat.

Good info. I'm thinking the tuner will fix my issues. I've got such a wide range now it makes me wonder. For example last night 36 degrees outside sitting at an idle. From a cold start heated up to 201 e-fan kicked on cooled down to 179, fan kicked off, went up to 185 and stayed. Consistent 185 when moving. Learning something new every day.

The newer trucks with the 8 speeds will run no colder then 185F no matter if you have a 160/170 or 180 t-stat in them as Stonedude has said. They just take a little longer to get up to temp ,but they'll all eventually settle in at right around 185F.The biggest benefit to running a 160 or 170 is more for the guys who are drag racing their trucks,as the engine will cool off a bit quicker in the staging lanes, and takes a bit longer to get up to 185F.

Yea you really need to tune to keep things consistent with an efan and the 180, but once you're setup you should be right around 185 for the most part. As Wild One brings up 185 is basically the ECT floor for the modern Hemi's and from the logs I've seen basically where you wanna be when tuning it. My preference is the 180 T-Stat for my conditions, but If I was hitting the drag strip I certainly would be running one of those 160 high flows.

I deleted the ags and zip tied the motor out the way. Tried running a 190* stat but the truck ran at 197 with the mechanical fan. My truck runs at 201-203 with the factory stat so I switched back to the factory stat. If I ever get around to running headers and tuning it maybe I’ll switch to the 190 again.

I did the same thing with my ags motor. I definitely ain't going to the drag strip! Y'all are dead on about running at 185*. That's what mines settling at. I'm gonna stay with the 180 for now. Soon as I get over the Christmas shopping I'll have a tuner. Speaking of headers, what y'all think? Shortys? Long tubes? High flow cats or no cats? Will there be a back pressure problem if I open it up and let it breath? I sure appreciate y'alls help!

LT's will give you the most power once installed and tuned for without a doubt, but I'll probably cheap out and run shorties when the time comes on my truck (Just my daily/lite off roading/occasional lite tow vehicle). More concerned about the damn manifold warp/bolt breakage issue than really going all out for power. As far as cats just about any good highflow I've seen isn't far off from cat-less with a good tune, but having been cat-less on a few vehicles I'd personally avoid it unless you relish the smell of a well tuned lawnmower. No matter how good a tune I've always been able to tell when a ride is cat-less based on either a cold start or some good WOT pulls. The smell is unmistakable.

Yeah me too! Got 58k+ on mine. Haven't heard the tick yet but won't be surprised when I do. I'll go shorty or long tubes for sure then if I hadn't already. You are right about the smell. Not interested in that. I'm not trying to melt the tires I just want to take advantage of some of the potential of the motor. I occasionally haul a tractor or fire wood but not much more than that. My Dad has an 01 3/4 ton with a Cummins for the heavy stuff.
