About purchasing a new(to me) 2010 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 with the Hemi. Right now I have my 1998 1500 with the magnum, and while she's beat up, with 792,000 miles still running strong on the original engine, she's convinced me Rams are the way to go :D I used to have a 2006 Ford F-250 I used to pull my boat when I lived in Key West, but when I sold the boat, I sold the diesel and bought the $800 tank of a 1500 I now love. However, I'm back in the market for a new boat, and the whole package is going to run ~#10,000 with the trailer and gas and gear. Think the 1500 can handle it? Would I have to get 4.10 gears and airbags to make it plausible? The plans would be eventually a 6" lift with 37"s, but I don't think I could do that AND tow effectively (granted I would also have a CAI and headers/exhaust with airbags for what it's worth). The trailer is 40' LOA and is triple axle with disk brakes. I attached a picture so you can see how she sits on the trailer. The gas tanks, water tanks, and gear all sits right over the axles, and for 34' the boat only weighs 5100 surprisingly, so I don't think the tongue weight is to outrageous.

Opinions! Go!
P.S. I know its over the trailer towing capacity, either that or right at it. I did use the search tool, also read every "how much have you towed" thread I could find but most maxed out at #8,000, or it was #15,000 with a goose neck and a diesel.

Go with diesel . If you're gonna tow you'll regret anything else.

The Cummins is bullet proof, and really underrated. If a 2010 diesel is not in your budget, the 6.7 and 6spd auto have been around since 07.5

I happen to know of a one possibly available. Never offroad, hardly has towed anything. Excellent owner.

Good luck in your search.

Welcome to rf, you will get a lot of posts saying get the diesel. Hopefully somebody that knows if it is plausible with a 1500 will chime in

You could possibly do it
Your motor and trans certainly wouldnt see the mileage out of your current truck

Everyone says tow capacity is just a random number but they actually run that load up a certain grade for a period of time to see if the motor or transmission overheats or if there are any other problems.

Also with that kind of money into a boat you have to the of saftey and legalities. Of you have an accident with your truck over weight insurance has the right to refuse the claim.

That might be pushing the limit for the truck

Most 2010+ diesels I've been looking at have been in the 40k+ range. (Granted I have been looking at 4x4 laramies). How does everyone like their 2007.5-2009 2500 diesels comfort wise and as far as features go? I really am not a fan of the body style to be honest :/ I found a 2010 ram 3500 Laramie megacab with the diesel locally for 32k, it has 62,000 miles and that sounds like a steal to me. Its a 4x4 as well. How do 3500s do offroad out of curiosity? Haha

I love my 08. Used to ride pretty stiff but I fixed that with Bilstiens. The 3500 will never be a great rock crawler but there's some good suspensions out there for them. Those prices you mentioned are good prices for the Diesel... 32k is a STEAL for a Laramie 4wd Cummins, as my Big Horn still books 27-33 k

What kind of off roading and is it a drw?
Its not cheap to haul that kind of weight lol
From my experiences, diesel's are just poor off roading vehicles
They're to big for the woods and to heavy for mud, they get stuck very easily and are a MFer to get unstuck
There are some great suspension lifts you can do for 2500/3500 but they are big money a well

Stepping up to a truck that big, it's not going to ride anything like a 2010 1500

As far as the interior, I don't really see much of a difference in my gf dads 09 2500 big horn and my dads 11 1500 big horn

The max towing I believe stated is 10k lbs with the 3.92 and hemi. That's usually a rough estimate so you don't haul 15k pounds, with the mods you listed I can see the truck being able to haul it but your on the line, whenever towing I prefer to be in a safe range then worrying for a hour drive at a time.

If it were me I would grab a 3rd gen 4x4 2500 or 3500, bout same price as 2010 hemi, my wife wouldn't let me buy a truck with 100k miles even though I explained how diesels typically are good for over 300k

I live in the middle of Florida. I don't think I'll ever see anything that looks similar to rock crawling.

It's a DRW. The most offroading I'd be doing would be some light mud/back trails occasionally or a buddies swamped pasture. Sugar sand is msot of what I have to deal with offraod. I know the ride wont be comfortable because of the giant leaf springs, but ti rides just as well as my beat up 1500 I have right now so I wouldn't notice much change. And thanks for the interior advice, I was wondering about that.

I would be doing 55-65 mph with 90% of my trip consisting of highway and toll roads that are well paved. It would be an hour to an hour and a half trip so I'd definitely be on edge, especially when I'm on I-4...

I agree with Sage... That price is crazy for that truck... I'd look pretty closely to determine if it were a lemon or salvage title.
Good luck!
