The loss of visibility out the side has been pretty tough to get used to, instead of looking twice for motorcycles I need to look 5x for them. I think when I'm not actually using it for weather protection or to avoid enticing thieves, those sides are getting rolled up just so I don't have a lapse of awareness and hurt someone.
I know the visibility is no worse than when I'm driving a big rig but I have square feet of mirror on there and in general I think more people - particularly folks on 2 wheels - know to give me plenty of room. Haven't had any close calls yet but it was an eye opener to discover just how much I use the passenger side rear visibility. We have a number of "y" shaped intersections too and if the does-not-stop corridor is acute on my right I can't see approaching traffic at all with the sides down.
