Splash Guards and Running Boards

I just bought some splash guards for the front and rear of my 2014 1500.
I have factory side steps and it sure seems like I have the wrong guards, even though I was specific about having side steps when I bought these. Years ago when I bought them for my wife's Aspen, the flap was molded to fit around the running boards. Does anyone know or have specific ones from ram, or do I have to make due with what I have. One thought that I may look into is removing the plastic cap on the front that says RAM, cutting off some of the step, and reinstalling the cap?? I will have to go out and look if that option is possible or even makes sense. I just hope I got the wrong guards and its just another trip to the dealership. ,,Brian

Can you post some pics of where the issue is. I had factory hard plastic guards on my 11 with Dodge factory steps and there's about an inch or so between the guard and step.

OK here is a website that says they don't work with side steps or fender flares, and I don't see ones that do?? The problem is getting the trailing edge to sit flush against the rocker/lower fender. The outer side of the flap hits the leading edge of the step(the black plastic cap with RAM on it) you have to push hard and bend the flap to come close to seating it, and I don't think the screw will hold it that way.Here is the address that say no side steps,,

Any thoughts? Has anyone put RAM mud flaps/splash guards on a 2013 or 2014 with the oval aluminum side steps?? Thanks, Brian

ran into the same issue on my 13. Can't find any that state they work with factory steps. Kinda gave up. I was going to look and see if the steps can be slid back at all but haven't gotten to it. hope you find a solution and post up if you do would love to know!

The only guards that I have found so far that work (only seen pictures) with the OEM wheel to wheel side steps are the weathertech guards.

I recall reading if you unbolt the steps and switch drive and passenger sides, it moves the step back an inch or so. Which should allow for the install of the flaps.

I also recommend you go with an aftermarket flap instead of the factory units.
Not only are the bulky and non-stylish, their protection is par at best, and they wear into the paint.

I personally have Husky guards, which fit perfectly with my aftermarket steps.

I could not do the swap side to side, because I have full length side steps,,,so today was the day, out came the saw!! I removed the side steps, taped off a 1 inch line and went for it, after some filing the caps went on and new screw holes were drilled and that part was done. Next I held up the splash guards on the truck and marked it with a yellow crayon so I knew where to put the protective tape, last I screwed on the guards and it looks good. Its a slow process but the results are worth it,,,Brian

Unfortunately, this won't work on mine, I have the black aluminum molded Mopar steps which don't have caps on the end.

To the question, was is hard cutting the steps? not really, I just had to fight my normal behavior of, pardon the expression, Ramming through it. Measure, measure, measure, and take your time cutting, check and recheck the line while you are cutting, so your cut stays nice and square. This just gives a better factory finish look when the plastic cap goes back on. Any small variations can be addressed with a file, and don't take the tape off the running board until you are done, they scratch very easy.My measurement showed that a one inch removal would give me what I needed with a little space. Before your make your first cut, try a practice cut on the scrap part to get the feel of how it will cut for you. A thin blade, with a high tooth count is what I used. I fully mounted the splash guards and then did the marking for the protective tape layout. When you buy your flaps, if you go to the dealer, its the stuff they put down below a plastic bedliner.

Hi guys new to the forum, glad it's here! Last week I took delivery on a 2014 big horn crew/ 6'4 bed & wheel 2 wheel side steps. I've had a 05. 08, & 11 . I retained my molded splash guards from the 11. I saw every where that they wouldn't fit / wheel 2 wheel SSs. Did a search & came apon this forum & thread. Loved the suggestion of cutting steps. I looked @ mine & saw there were 12 screws/ side attaching them & 2 screws for the cap. I was prepared to dismount the steps & cut an 1" off although I would have used a MITRE saw for a nice clean cut. But first I wanted to try mounting them first without cutting. Much to my surprise they fit great, the 2 vertical holes lined up perfectly, all I had to do is drill a new 1/8' bottom pilot hole. They fit great & sit tight against the end cap! By the way what's the best method of posting photos, thanks!

I need to do this. Did you use the Huskys or OEM flaps? Im to scared to cut my runnign boards tho.. very clean nice work. How did you get the caps off and resecure them?

I bought weathertech. No drilling or cutting my wheel to wheel side steps (2013)

^^ hmmm. I like that. However I understand that weathertech does not have the clear film to prevent the guard from rubbing the fender raw. Is that true?

No drilling, have to remove the wheel spats, no clear film included. You can buy clear film if you want. I didn't apply any I don't have any issues with rubbing. The molded mopar flaps there are issues with rubbing.

The only con I have so far is the front flaps don't provide the same wheel coverage as the rear.

Nice job jbr, I have the same issue with the ram Mopar mud guards and currently I'm driving without the caps on. Should cut them about and inch and a half on Monday when I'm off from work.....just added the Mopar tow hitch as well and next week will get my American flag and eagle bug deflector on, can't wait for that. Got it on autoanything.com for 116 bucks. Will get pics in soon....

Thanks you for the tip. I take mitre saw 10 in. with a steel blade and water when I cuted the side step. finishion with a smooth lime... Really nice job buddy
