Sputters after going into drive?

Hey all,

2001 ram 2500 5.9 magnum. When cruising, any speed really, if i put it into neutral, then back into drive and hit the gas right away, it will sputter and not accelerate. After 3 seconds its fine. It is a very noticeable backfire/sputter noise. It happens like 3 times, then back to normal. Any thoughts? Thanks

why do you put it in neutral then back to drive jw?

If im traveling downhill i will put it into neutral, so i have to put it back in drive sometime
