Either way he is wrong on what it calls for. Are you saying running 5w-30 will not void my warranty? That is not what I am hearing from Redline and others. Personally I don't think they could prove the 5w30 did any damage. They keep dropping viscosity to keep up with EPA standards per the "oil groups".
Yes...

Not exactly the same issue, but last summer when I went from Amsoil 5-20 to Amsoil 5-30, I had a code on my handheld scanne that said "Incorrect Viscosity". I have never seen an engine do this.

Only the very early trucks will do that, the majority of them being 09's and a few 08's.Up till about 2017 the owners manual said you could use 5W-30.

Hemi 6.4
The last three trucks I’ve had had hemis. 17 5.7 an 18 6.4 and 20 6.4. All three clattered on cold starts on the recommended penzoil. Worse after a short cycle of the engine.

Lubeguard worked wonders for the 17 and 18. I’ve had the my current 6.4 on amsoil since the second oil change and it keeps everything smooth.

I know of a 400k+ 3rd gen Ram 5.7,rattles like a diesel,or worse. All the time.Keeps running.Yet another hemi will have a noisy lifter and destroy the cam etc. This thing really sounds like every lifter is bad.

A young feller at a tire store owns it.And loves it. Says when it quits he'll put a 6.4 hemi in it.You see, that truck knows he is prepared. If he wasn't, that motor would up and quit quick!
You got that right, lol. There's days i think if you pile enough steel and plastic together it gets a mind of it's own,and it starts to know what you're thinking, similiar to the wife, lol

Yes! Everytime my ol ladys car was put in the shop, mine would breakdown.I'd fix it...then she'd drive it.And I'd be out of a car till hers was fixed.Something not quite right about all this....

Maybe overkill but I dont like running break in oil all that long.. Changed it at about 1500 miles or a little over. Went with PUP 0w-20 and a WiX XP filter. Noticed not long after I got clatter on cold starts and the engine just seems louder. Oil pressure is fine. Clatter is only on cold starts and not every time. Goes away after a few seconds. My buddies 2022 is much quieter than mine. Tempted to do the Redline 5w-30 and Royal Purple 20-820 filter.

I realize this is a thread about the 5.7L Hemi, but several years ago my 2012 4.7L V8 had a godawful startup clatter. Tried multiple things, different oils, expensive filters, etc. What finally ended it was the combination of a Ford  FL 820S filter (Equiv of Mopar 899) and switching to 5w/30. No more startups sounding like it was about to eat itself.

That was 200K miles ago. (250K on it currently).

Over the years I've gone back and forth between 5w/20 & 5w/30. I didn't notice any difference in mileage. These days I stick with 30.

FWIW, the filter that seemed to make the issue really bad was the Wix that is loved by many. Not trying to diss on the Wix filter, but it did not work for me.

YMMV. Good luck.

OK

Most everyone has the Wrong Idea when it comes to
Multi-Grade Motor Oil

First thing is SAE
SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers.

The W means
The "W" in multigrade oil stands for "winter" and indicates the oil's viscosity at low temperatures.
The number before the "W" represents the oil's viscosity at low temperatures,
while the number after the "W" represents the oil's viscosity at high temperatures

In Australia, they ONLY have 0 W- Motor Oil
The lower the number before the W, is in reference to the size of the hole that oil or any liquid will pass through in colder weather.
The hole referred to is the size of the Oil Tubes built into engine block .

0W oil
0W oil has a lower viscosity than 5W oil, which means it flows more easily at cold temperatures. This makes it better for starting engines in cold weather and for providing lubrication and protection in extreme cold. 0W-20 oil is rated for external temperatures up to 104°F (40°C) and internal engine temperatures up to 212°F (100°C)

The reason that the manufacturer suggests
5w- 20 for Ram 1500s 5.7L, is because the 20 Weight Oil works best with the Ports in the MDS system

You may have noticed that previous Ram 2500 & larger 5.7L owners manual suggests 5w-30 weight Oil, that is due to the 3/4 ton & above have not had the MDS System.

I am not including the newer vehicles, where even some Heavy Duty Rams do have MDS

Now every one should understand that
