Steering wheels haven’t had locks in them since 2008, so that won’t be it, unless he has an 08 or older

Need to know what year he has, if it’s the electric power steering, could be an issue with the rack.

It was -16 celcius here Monday morning and all was good????

That was with push button start inside the vehicle. Not the remote start. Not ruling out that either.

I have had this problem as well... I found the intermediate shaft u joint to be at fault.... lack of lubrication. I hit it hard with a good penetrating oil then with a light airisol grease. It freed up and works fine , but you know it's borrowed time and should be replaced. Disconnect the shaft, see if the linkage turns.... easy enough test and if so it'll save some bucks

Thanks I will try that, sound way more likely than the whole rack going only when cold. Did you happen to take photos?

There are little boots around each cup of the u joint. If you take an angle pick and pull the rubber back you can get lube in there. Just make sure to use a bunjee on the steering wheel to keep it centered or it'll free spin with the sgaft out and you'll take out your clock spring and that's a pain to fix.
