Stellantis recalling more than 300,000 Ram trucks for braking system defect

Stellantis is recalling more than 300,000 Ram Heavy Duty pickup trucks because a faulty part could cause certain braking and tracking systems to fail.

The Netherlands-based automaker said the hydraulic control unit on the trucks is prone to failure, which can cause the anti-lock brake, electronic stability control and traction control systems to not work properly. Stellantis said regular braking systems are not affected by the defective part and that it's unaware of any related injuries.

The trucks in question are all model years 2017-18 and include the Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500. The recall includes a total of 317,630 trucks, including a small number of them in Canada, Mexico and elsewhere.

Stellantis said it will advise customers who may be affected as to when they may obtain service, which will be free of charge.

Customers with additional questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.

Last month, Stellantis announced a recall of about 207,000 Jeep and Dodge SUVs in the U.S. to fix a computer problem that can disable the anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control safety features. In September, Stellantis recalled nearly 1.5 million Ram pickup trucks worldwide to fix a software problem that can disable the electronic stability control system.

Last week Stellantis announced that CEO Carlos Tavares was stepping down after nearly four years in the top spot of the carmaker.

In addition to the recalls, Stellantis has been struggling with falling sales that have led to layoffs and contributed to ballooning inventory on dealer lots. Last quarter, Stellantis reported that net revenues plunged 27% from the same period a year ago.

Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest automaker, was created by the 2021 merger of PSA Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

my '22 has that recall..55B. the recall says that the ABS module may fail to engage the stability control. doesnt say the ABS brakes will fail to work. not much of an issue for me so I have been putting off taking mine in to the dealer. they kinda have a reputation for screwing up something else while ones vehicle is in there.

About time. Hopefully they will reimburse me for the second module replacement. A little over $1K. On the third one now. The third one was no charge as the second one failed under the parts warranty. The first one was under warranty. All replacements were the "AB" suffix.
If you read the documents at the NHTSA site, Ram has no current replacement window as the repair part has yet to be engineered.

When the replacement module installed by the dealer under warranty failed, I went without ABS/ESC/cruise for about 18 months in my 2018 Ram 2500 before I did the DIY fix that lasted for a few months. Then the AB parts started to become available and I've swapped that in. I'm out of warranty and have no plans of letting them perform the emissions de-tuning. Maybe they will reimburse me for the AB module.

It's been known for quite some time that the oversized brushes in the motor for the ABS pump are the issue; how they have gotten away so long before issuing this recall is criminal.

Whew! Our 2018 3500 starting doing the intermittent HCU error thang about five months ago (40K miles) and I was waiting for a recall before biting the bullet and getting it fixed. I found out about the recall a few days ago when I got an email from GasBuddy telling me about the recall. (I am in no way affiliated with GasBuddy, BTW.) I did do a fairly detailed complaint with the NHTSB (?) about a month ago. Maybe that helped...I'll never know.

Well how about that… 2017 2500 and on number 4. 2 under warranty and 2 out of my pocket. I’ll see if I get any money back. Worse yet has been their attitude the entire time regarding this part. Every time I had a problem it was like the first time they had ever seen it. In the mean time thousands are failing….

My service guy tried to say that the lack of me having the brake lines bled were responsible for the failures...I told him the handbook never mentions that btw I have less than 60k on my 2017.

As I said we are on our third HCU. We basically only use our 3500HD for hauling livestock with a very large gooseneck trailer. Just turned 30K miles.
If you are unaware, when this fault occurs it also disables the 4WD function. I miss the old shift lever 4WD.
It is very important for us as sometimes we have to drive into a field and without 4WD it can be dicey at times. We actually slightly damaged the truck as it slid sideways into a tree due to no 4WD. This was when we learned the function was disabled. dealer said the ABS-STC and 4WD are intertwined. I don't use cruise so I did not know about that one.
When they replaced the HCU for the third time under the part warranty, apparently the new one was internally shorted out. They had to order another HCU and the control module too. As per the work order, the defective "new" HCU blew out the control module. Dealer did not cover the module, but I complained to RAM and sent in the work order stating the "Bad Replacement HCU Blew Out The Control Module". Ram covered it and sent me a check.
Still out over $1K for the second out of warranty repair and living with a ugly dent.

I have the shift lever on the floor on my 2018 instead of pushbutton, I don't recall it disabling the 4wd when my module went a couple years ago. But maybe I didn't use 4wd or the floor lever doesn't get disabled (?).

Disabled the knob 4WD selection. No floor lever on ours.
BTW after that I did figure out a workaround. Shut truck off, restart and immediately select 4WD before the error warning appears. Just a couple seconds. 4WD will engage.

2017 3500 Dually - Twice replaced: 2019 under warranty; 2022 for over $1K. I emailed my "concern" to Ram about this in 2022 but to no avail. I thought I had notified NHTSA of this issue but could find no confirmation. Can only assume NHTSA got involved. Now to see if I can be reimbursed for fix #2 and Ram can fix the problem.
