Stellantis recalling more than 300,000 Ram trucks for braking system defect

Stellantis is recalling more than 300,000 Ram Heavy Duty pickup trucks because a faulty part could cause certain braking and tracking systems to fail.

The Netherlands-based automaker said the hydraulic control unit on the trucks is prone to failure, which can cause the anti-lock brake, electronic stability control and traction control systems to not work properly. Stellantis said regular braking systems are not affected by the defective part and that it's unaware of any related injuries.

The trucks in question are all model years 2017-18 and include the Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500. The recall includes a total of 317,630 trucks, including a small number of them in Canada, Mexico and elsewhere.

Stellantis said it will advise customers who may be affected as to when they may obtain service, which will be free of charge.

Customers with additional questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.

Last month, Stellantis announced a recall of about 207,000 Jeep and Dodge SUVs in the U.S. to fix a computer problem that can disable the anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control safety features. In September, Stellantis recalled nearly 1.5 million Ram pickup trucks worldwide to fix a software problem that can disable the electronic stability control system.

Last week Stellantis announced that CEO Carlos Tavares was stepping down after nearly four years in the top spot of the carmaker.

In addition to the recalls, Stellantis has been struggling with falling sales that have led to layoffs and contributed to ballooning inventory on dealer lots. Last quarter, Stellantis reported that net revenues plunged 27% from the same period a year ago.

Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest automaker, was created by the 2021 merger of PSA Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

Mine went out about 15 months ago. I filed a complaint with NHTSA about a year ago. I contacted a friend who is a shop foreman at a dealership (not Ram) but is an owner and expert on them early in the week. He told me to give it a few more days and within 24 hours I got the alert from Carfax.
I will be glad to get that fixed and might even do the emissions recall at the same time!
I hope whatever version, A, B ,C or Z this is, that it works. They should pay us for the pain and suffering of listening to that chime.
I put the sixth version of a tranny solenoid in my Aspen years ago. The OE one failed at 120K. The replacement has gone 176K so far!

I am not sure the problem I have a late model 2500 has 151,500 mies with stock brakes. I hope they fail when I come up behind a left lane idiot. If they can drive in the left lane I should have the right to get under them and put them in the wall ...

2018 2500 replaced 2 times, first under extended warranty and second under warranty because the first one didn’t last. Hopefully they will put a third one in since the second is still working.

Got my recall letter yesterday and there is a section and website for reimbursement claims for previous repairs paid out of pocket.

Filled out the reimbursement form at fcarecallreimbursement.com and a warning popped up stating repairs made before the recall may not be reimbursed.

Way to take care of the customer FCA.

The HCU sits right on top of the front driver wheel well. Is that the case on the 2016 and below models? I wonder if there is just too much vibration at that location for the part to handle.

From what if have found on Youtube there is an electric motor integrated as part of the HCU and the brushes in the effected units get stuck open after wearing out. ( no contact = no workie ) Some guys have repaired them on the work bench for 0 dollars. You can get the motor off without removing the HCU but its tight.

Wow, I was upset I had to replace the unit on my 2018 Power Wagon about 2 years ago and with very little mileage, cost $2300 out of pocket (can't imagine having to do it multiple times )! It was a common and well documented issue back then. My wagon has been fine since but still lower than average mileage for the model year. I did receive my letter and trying to navigate the reimbursement process. I also recall there was a parts availability issue at the time and told it would be at least a month or so for the part until I told the dealer I was going elsewhere for the repair since it wasn't waranteed. Miraculously a part became available and had my truck back in a couple of days. I have to believe there has been injuries or at least a lawsuit forcing them to finally make this a recall!

I read all those posts as well. You can also send the motor off to be refurbished. It just seems odd that they can not come up with a better electric motor, my power tools have brushless motors, I do not see why they could not go that route.

So I suspect, the location of the part has something to do with why it keeps failing and why they can not find a fix.

Totally agree with the location comment. Mine is always covered with dirt, grit ,sand and road salt. That can't be good. It needs a better cover or housing. Hopefully the replacement HCU units are a better design as well!!
