Well the title pretty much says it all. Some ******* decided to give me a early Christmas present in the form of a bag of sugar in my gas tank.

I was getting ready this morning to head to work and I hit the remote start to warm up the truck while I was finishing getting ready. I guess it was running for about five min and I happen to look out the kitchen window will pouring a cup of coffee and seen my gas cap cover open. My first thought is I must have left it open when filling up the evening before, then I looked a little closer and seen a small pile of something white on the driveway below the gas cap. I grabbed my keys and shut the truck off and run outside and sure enough the gas cap was loose and sugar was caked full underneath the cap. Its was caked so much that the metal flap was pushed wide open.

So to make a long story short I had it towed to the dealer who will not be back in till Monday. I am sure it probably did nothing to the engine has the fuel filter probably caught any that made it that far but I have no idea what it could have done to other parts in the tank.

I will have to wait Monday or Tuesday before they can drop the tank. My insurance will cover it but that still leaves me dropping at least 500 for the deductible. I can not believe some people have nothing better to do then get out in 20 degree weather at night and risk their life (yes I always have a gun within reach) just to get a kick and to make it hard on working people who probable pay for their welfare checks and food stamps. :****: It really burns me the hell up. Sorry for the rant.

Any of you fellows have any idea's on what the extent of damage could be? I am hopping it's just going to be dropping the tank, cleaning, and new fuel filter, but I have no idea what else it could have effected inside the tank.

I'm not sure about what kind of damage there might be but I hope you find out who did it and take care of business. I think I'd set up some game cams or something.

And thanks for posting that meme about "not everyone goes home for Thanksgiving". I spent 2 years in Iraq while in the Army and I know how those guys/gals are feeling right now.

Thank you for your service.

I do plan on putting up some sort of cams at this point. This is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me in the 30+ years I have lived in this area. It was really pretty shocking to tell you the truth. I did inform the police but am doubting any thing will come of it.

Buy a locking gas cap?? Kind of inconvenient but more convenient than taking your vehicle to the shop if it happens again and paying an insurance deductible. Sucks that some people can't respect other peoples property. An older guy I know always tells me stories about how he loaded up salt into shotgun rounds and he called them his "idiot shells". Just a thought....lol

dirty ****. I hope its not too bad. and I hope you get just satisfaction!

I had a neighbor suffer the same fate about 25 years ago. since then, I've been using locking gas caps. yes, they are easily defeatable and annoying on a daily basis but if some D-bag is going to sugar my tank, I'll atleast make them work for it. I hate it the Ram doesn't have a remote fuel door. My Mustang is worse, it doesn't even have a traditional fuel cap so I can't get a locker.

The old rock salt in the shotgun shells... My papa did this back in the day and was a sure way to keep dogs from taking a dump in the front yard ha ha. Talking about burning some one's ass up lol.

I have one on order has we speak. I agree seems like all newer vehicles should come with a locking fuel door. The Ram Cummins I had before this truck was like your mustang, it had no fuel cap what so ever, just open up the fuel door shove the nozzle in and start pumping.

Ever burn sugar in a pan? Well that's what it does to upper cylinders, when the sugar burns, it will leave a huge deposit of molasses type crap that will harden like a rock in there and the top end and injectors are done, cooked, fried. But since it was only running for a few min and it wasn't sloshed around, then you may be ok but sugar does mix with gas without agitation depending on how long it was in the tank. Sorry to read that happened bud, good luck.

We had this happen to one of our squad cars a couple years ago.

It was about $2000...burned up the injectors and a bunch of other things.

I'm sorry this happened to you... some people are absolute **** as you said. Get it taken care of and hopefully it won't happen again.

When I first got my Ram I paid $20 for a Mopar locking gas cap. The angle of the nozzle is a pain so it takes an extra few seconds to get the cap off...but its secure. I've had a few people ask me why I got one...and I explain that you never know what someone may be willing to do to your vehicle.

Good luck on the fix. Keep us updated.

Just to be clear on the Mustang ...... yes, there is no traditional gas cap. But the fuel door is locked, and the only way to get it open is to hit the release button on the console. Then there is a little tab on the left side of the filler spout that has to be depressed to get a secondary little "door" open. The Mustang gas tank is much more secure than the one in our trucks.

Sorry to hear that. Nowadays you can’t have anything nice without anyone not giving a $hit about your stuff. I hope it is not as bad and it is less than your deductible. What Mopar locking gas cap did you order?

You can get a Stant locking gas cap (#10508) at most parts stores or online for a little over $10. It's the first thing I do on a new car without a locking fuel door. I keep the key on a long red "remove before flight" key chain in the slide out storage bin under center dash. I actually keep the spare key hidden in the truck so there's no chance I'll be locked out of getting gas. I don't find it annoying at all since it only adds a few seconds to getting gas and gives piece of mind. The one on my Jeep has been on there for 16 years. $10 is cheap insurance.

Thanks for the link. It looks like it doesn’t fit a 17’ Sport 1500 according to the description.

Looks like that genuine Mopar cap is made by Stant from the "S" in the picture. Stant #10508 works fine on my '16 Outdoorsman.

I appreciate all the info fellows. It is a shame that some one just came out of the blue and did this for no good reason but to just do it. Like I said I was in complete shock when this happened. I live in a small community where mostly every one knows each other. I'm thinking this was a luck of the draw type thing. Probably some one passing through the area.

I'm just not going to let it bother me. I'm sure there are people out there with much bigger problems then me and it does me no good to complain about it. I will have it fixed and move on and consider myself blessed that I am able to afford a newer truck.

I will keep y'all posted on what damage was done when they get the tank dropped next week.
