Just purchased a 2015 Ram 1500 Laredo 4 x 4 3.0 Diesel- after 17 yrs with a 2002 Ram 2500 4 x d 5.9 L Diesel. After reading the owners manual - discovered the truck will take 5W-30 Synthetic instead of the old 15W-40. I traded my gallons of 15W-40 back to Bi-Mart - and bought Mobil 1 .

The question is what is the best synthetic oil for this vehicle ? All this is a new experience - my old truck
went on and on for 17 years - but sounded like a log truck next to this 3.0 Diesel.

It's like going from a Model T to a Ferrari !

5W-40 synthetic engine oil
(10.5 qts with filter)

Must meet spec: MS-10902 (CES20081/CJ-4, which has since been superceded by CES20086/CK-4)

Certified brands:
Mopar
Shell Rotella T6
AmazonBasics Heavy Duty Diesel

I just used Shell Rotella T6 because it was slightly cheaper than AmazonBasics at the time.

Rotella T-6 is probably the most popular oil for the EcoD, there's a bunch of trucks that have tons of miles on them using it.
There are a few people that run Mobil 1(Diesel truck version), Mobil DELVAC 1, Amsoil, and couple other premium oils out there

All deisel oils were reformulated, crazy what was poorer quality oils are now great, and the great oils are now less then. Browse the pqia page, I'd look at three things, high tbn, high moly, and high cSt. Valvoline and delo used to be your less known deisels, turns out they have good additive packages. Delvac and Rotella are easily the two nest names in deisel oil, not their formula is not as stellar as they once were. These are recent formulas.

never use 5w30.

Your truck does not take 5/30. It was changed due to main bearing issues. In other words, it will wreck your engine. You need an oil rated for a diesel engine.

OP - pay attention to this......Italio-Diesels had engine crank bearing failures due to improper lubrication design. Either and / or insufficient bearing surface area for the peak cylinder pressure load, inadequate oil supply, or both.

40 wt oil seemed to resolve it. Many articles on this. ONLY use 15W-40 or 5W-40. Hopefully you don't have knocking started already.

OP, you need to be sure that your oil is rated for diesel service, it needs to meet CK-4 diesel specs, it must also be full synthetic 5W-40. I try to stay with ROTELLA T6 5W-40, I used the last of my T6 last month, it's in short supply & nearly impossible to get right now, I substituted VALVOLINE PREMIUM BLUE EXTREME SYNTHETIC 5W-40, it has earned the seal of approval from CUMMINS. VALVOLINE has always been excellent oil. I managed maintenance on a fleet for 14 years, nearly all diesels, Powerstroke (NAVISTAR) 7.3 & 6.0, some of those engines went about 750k miles using DELO 400 15W-40, I would highly recommend it too, it's expensive right now, & you need to upgrade from the 400, I don't remember right now how it's designated.
