It's wild that with all the information out there about what LSPI is and what causes it, people still post outlandish theories that in no way align with the facts.


Are you doing a UOA at the end of the OCI? If yes, please don't send it to Blackstone, their analysis results are full of inaccuracies and they can't measure fuel dilution. Sometimes they can't measure the viscosity either. Oil Analyzers, WearCheck, or Polaris, are all better choices.

I'm curious to see what a majority PAO plus a dash of Ester (no ANs) with an SL-era additive package motor oil combined with another oil made entirely from GTL plus a Dexos 1 DI package looks like. Neither of these two are great on their own, neither is the result after you mix them.

Like I've said before.... The Very best education whatever one does for a living is networking with those who either have more experience in a given issue or employing the insight of the people who are/were on the ground floor of developing whatever you or I are trying to conclude a diagnosis on. My late father was a high achieving computer systems engineer for IBM. As brilliant as he was, he admonished me frequently that "The smartest man on earth knows what he doesn't know"!

I quote from my own experiences and education, coupled with 47 years of repairing automobiles and seeing the evolution of the automobile over 5 decades. When I began my career, all headlights were round and made of glass, the Catalytic converter was just showing up, and EGR was a new fangled thing.

As things progressed to total computer controls, I "knew what I didn't know" and had a watershed moment as to whether to stay in this profession or move on as technology rapidly out-stripped a mechanic's knowledge base. MANY old-timers with whom I worked quit the profession. One I remember fondly went into the business of selling shrimp and did well. (Sounds like Forrest Gump!)

Yeah.... but think about this: At high throttle demand when accelerating, there is so much fuel demand for stoic as programmed into the algorithm. So, all of the sudden, as acceleration progresses, the engine (AKA Pump) reaches it's maximum efficiency and can no longer build power. Enter the "black box" aka transmission.... it is commanded to shift into the next gear in order to continue to accelerate. At the same high throttle, the engine suddenly slows down RPM as the transmission shifts, and the LOAD rises exponentially. Compression goes up, the piston is at "low speed as it gets close to TDC and transitions direction, there is fuel in all this high pressure heated mixture, and there is a minute amount of fuel lurking in the carbon on the piston top. BOOM! That fuel explodes and burns at an uncontrolled rate, or pre-ignites. This is more problematic with GDI engines because the fuel is injected into the cylinder directly at a later time than port injection. ALL this is compounded by very high compression, ersatz higher combustion temp and STOIC way above 14.7 to 1 (Very lean) making it even hotter!

All this because C.A.F.E. is unrealitically high and little bitty engines make horsepower far in excess of yesteryear's big block muscles cars!

AMSOIL solved LSPI when they reformulated for API SP. Though not licensed, it adheres to the API SP standards. Everyone offers API SP oils these days, but AMSOIL's are a cut above the jib, so to speak. If you're concerned about LSPI in an engine that's known to have the issue, I recommend you give AMSOIL Signature Series a try.

Looking over old post, I've seen @Burla and others plug either Red Line or Pennzoil for the past twelve years. Did they register as "vendors"? Is Shell or Philips 66 (Red Line Oil) sending any money over to the forum owner? I doubt they are.

Control system, royal purple, or valvoline synpower? Which would you or do you use?

I use Mobile 1 synth. Not claiming it's better than the others, I just know it's good and it's what I buy. One time they were out and I got Valvoline synth and didn't think twice about it.

Also is the oil change message triggered by a specific mileage engine hour or what?

I have heard it's a combination of things--mileage, temperature and other driving conditions.... but whatever it is, mine has seemed to pretty squarely recommend oil changes at the 9,000 mile interval, almost without fail. The oil message did this on my 2018 and 2020 Rams with 5.7L.

It went OK, wasn't super rattley/noisy but both RL and HPL are quieter. The UOA looked pretty good:

I just prefer an oil that has everything in it instead of having to add LG or whatever, and I like how quiet it's now running too since switching to HPL.

Correct - most us us notice this, which is why Red Line is also so popular with Harley bikers - it really quiets the clanking of the air-cooled engines (they have a couple liquid cooled models now, too).

I put it in my bike, and the wise men were correct. It doesn't clank & clunk anymore. Owing to quality synthetic base stocks + heavy antiwear additives + heavier use of Polyol Ester base oil (jet oil), which is a polar molecule which clings to metal surfaces. Yep - you pay extra for it, if you need it. I only use Red Line in the Hemi & the Harley. All else gets PUP.

Off the topic a bit but What year is your Harley? I have a 2021 Road glide with the M8, it rattles a bit on cold starts then quiets down. Currently using Mobil 1 V Twin but thinking on trying Redline 20-50 once to see if it runs quieter or have heard some say that adding some Lube Gard Biotech will quiet them down also.
