quick question for you guys. I have 131k on my 2014 ram. I have been getting my oil changed at a local lube shop, and running the synthetic blend they have. changing around every 4k miles. I went to doing some research, and discovered by changing my own oil, I could put a good quality oil and filter in, and still save 20-30 bucks compared to having the shop do it. would be an issue to change over to Pennzoil ultra platinum with a fram full synthetic filter, even though I have that many miles on my truck?

Thanks!

The only issue that "MAY"happen is that you "MIGHT" get a lil blow by till rings reseat themselves by useing full synthetic but i would lean twards the no there will be no probs..Leave it as a blend if you want, not gonna see and "OMG" benifits...

So PUP is a high detergency oil, and technically is can hyper clean things in a high mileage engine, especially if it is the original PCV, which if hasn't been done yet shuld be done first-change pcv?

However, if indeed you are on a 4k mile interval with a synthetic blend, that means your engine is likely very clean and hyper cleaning wont be an issue. After you change your oil, check the dip stick like after 250 miles and 500 miles, if there is an issue it will be very dark on the dip stick. Then the solution would be simply change the oil again. I would move over to PUP with the small risks involved, it is one of the very best choices for the hemi.

With that many miles I'd go straight to the PUP 0W40 if you're going to switch to PUP. It's probably one of best formula's for the Hemi that isn't Redline and what I was running before I ran out my left over stockpile for my SRT(It got moved to Redline right after break in was complete and then the truck got moved to RL 5W30 after I ran out of all my 0W40). Oil pressures are fine even on a low miles 5.7 and at 131k I'd be moving to a heavier oil if you've been running the water weight 5W20. PUP0W40 sheers down into a 30 weight pretty quick so it's not really much of a 40 weight to begin with. Wouldn't be too worried if you were running Syn Blend at 4k OCI's since the engine should be fairly clean, but you might notice the oil get dark pretty soon with the detergentcy of PUP as mentioned by @Burla. If it does just change it early and keep an eye on it.

Burla is da man when it comes to syn oil!

Hey Burla, I guess I drifted away from that excellent thread. Had some surgery and moved to TN since. Good to see your name.

I agree. Pennzoil Platinum, or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (PUP, which usually must be ordered online, I get mine free delivery from Walmart.com) are excellent choices for the Hemi, and recommended by Mother Mopar. The Fram Ultra can be picked up locally and is a fine filter.

I've run PUP with the Fram since the second oil change and my hemi is quiet and clean.

At 131000 miles, and out of warranty, I would step up to 5/30. Might want to check out red line oil. That being said, I use 5/20 pup with 6000 mile or 6 months, which ever comes first oci. X2 on the farm ultra.

I use penzoil oil ultimate platinum. Excellent oil. You can order from Walmart (Wally World) on line free shipping and pick it up at the local Wally World. $19 penzoil ultimate in the 5 quart container size. Also make sure you have the right size oil filter removal tool. Try not to buy one of those universal one size fits all. They may cause issues taking the filter off. Only tight the filter hand tight (snug) when it goes back on. Do not tighten the filter with the tool or it maybe really difficult to take off next time. Good luck

Me too. Got a spinal cord stimulator that does absolutely nothing. These pain management hacks need to be watched like a hawk.

And, to boot, all my Red Line oil is in storage due to my move. Can't do oc in an apt complex anyway. Can't wait to buy some property and get back to doing my own oil again! I don't trust anybody, lol.

Ouch man. As much as I'm a die hard conservative I wish Texas would hurry up an get on the medical card program. I tried that **** after my T3-5 fusion and learning how to walk again when I was in Seattle... it was better than Oxycontin and didn't zombie me out. I did OTC CBD for a while and some of my doctors got all offended I wasn't taking their sanctioned prescription grade smack... Like man I can't hold down an engineering job while being high and worthless 24/7. I can't believe how bad my stupid expensive insurance is for spinal issues =(.

No. On another synthetic oil thread there are a few folk using 5/30 with out issues. At 113000 miles, there is some wear that mal es 5/30 a better choice imho.

i hear ya. gets tiring. i can deal with the snow no problem, its the windchill and ice that i hate. on the otherhand, 100 plus temps and high humidity in the south is not my cup of tea.
