Just got my truck back from the body shop, and shop told me I needed new tail lamp sockets.

20210423_161220.jpg

Have not had a problem before. Replaced the bulbs easily, but now get a quick ding and tail lamp out message. Either left or right. Sometimes the message was so fast, I couldn't see it. Both work, or appear to when I check.

No local parts stores had stock, so guess I will visit the stealership.

Anyone one else have issues like this?

Look up part number at on of the Mopar parts website and then search for part number. Amazon or eBay will be less expensive.

Or as BlkZrx said hit Rockauto.

Yeah, definately. They BOTH were like that, too.

Looks like it will be RockAuto for me. Think they are ~ $12 each for the Mopar ones, and $3 for offbrand. So, not really that bad either way.

Get the mopar ones. I helped a guy trouble shoot error messages for a few hours. His sockets had bee. Replaced at some point, but were an off brand. Went to oem and hasn't had a problem since. (All started with a cluster upgrade to the premium cluster, kept showing error codes for the rear lights even after adjusting with alfaobd and putting incande bulbs back in)

I got two sockets from the dealer @ $16 each. Figured Rock Auto would be about same after shipping.

Installed them. I did get a quick ding twice, but couldn't read what it said, was too quick.

I have not checked the 3rd brake light assembly yet. So that is part of the circuit too?

I did just get my truck back from the body shop, and he showed me how bad the sockets/bulbs were, but I NEVER had a lamp out message until after I got it back. And they did have my bed off to repair the caved in bedside in front of the drivers side rear tire.

Thoughts?

Pinched wire when reinstalling the bed?
Too bad it's a body shop, they're not noted for solving electrical issues....after causing them.

Well, I finally got around to doing some checks, and my center brake light is completely not working.

The quick message I get is "right turn signal lamp out". Seems odd that a center brake light would cause this.

Or is the computer just not that smart?

Where is the wiring for that lamp run? The body shop had to replace the rear corner of the uniside on the drivers side, so the rear door and trims were removed in the process.

@EdGs the warning showing up as the right turn signal is laziness of programming, not sure why either. There is actually separate wiring from the BCM to the third brake light as you can disable the light completely using AlfaOBD. I think the wiring harness for the third brake light runs down one of the front body pillars.

@crash68 Thank you for the info.

I need to check the center brake light for leaks anyways. It was just very odd that I never had an error message or issue until the truck went for body work.

Hopefully, just coincidence.

Changed my 3rd brake light bulb, still got a quick ding while driving.

Same "Right rear turn signal out" message.

Guess I will have to check every single bulb and connector on the truck.

Mine does that sometimes because it has - and came with - the 3rd brake light "pulse" option that makes it blink like 3 times when you apply the brakes. I test drove 3 Rams when I bought mine and all of them presented the same "Right turn signal out" message. He didn't even know at the time why they were all doing it until the Chrysler folks that were there for a sales event told us about it and said it presented the error because it sensed a short from the pulse. It may be different in your case, but mine doesn't produce the error "every time" I hit the brakes but when it does I'm guessing it's because the 3rd brake light did its blinking option.

That's interesting. Hard to imagine that the "pulse" option would cause an error, but it doesn't surprise me at all.

I never had the error message until I got my truck back from the body shop. I replaced the tail lamp sockets with ones from the dealership.

When I put it up on the lift to do my next oil chance, I will have a look at the wiring runs.

Does yours have the pulse option with the 3rd brake light? I suppose that's really a moot point if you never had the issues before it went to the body shop though. It was just a thought though. If all 3 of the trucks that I test drove hadn't had the error I would likely be looking for the same thing. Strange that it does that though but I'm guessing - for mine anyway - that the loss of power during the blinking part make it throw the false error. Again, just throwing options out there as I have experienced the same issue. I do hope you determine the fault thougg.

I have no idea about the pulse option.

And I don't have to have my foot on the brake for the message to pop up. Mostly very quick it happens. "Right rear turn signal lamp out"

Haven't had too much time yet, but going to check the trailer plugs too. Definately strange, for sure.

Ah, not having to have the foot on the brake changes the game. I'm with you then regarding wiring, and perhaps a short from a wire being pulled maybe through an opening that striiped the sheathing maybe? Best of luck finding the culprit. Of course, please post the results when you do figure out what it was.

The wiring for the 3rd brake light would either go do the drivers side "C" or "A" pillar.

If it goes down the "C" pillar, it might be seen when you remove door protector at the bottom of your drivers side doors, but it may go through the bottom of the cab right below the "C" pillar.
If it was routed along the roof line, it would go down through thedrivers side "A" pillar along with several other wires. you can see them best by pulling of the "A" pillar assist handle

I don't believe that any wires go down the passenger side "A" pillar, i did not see any when i ran my CB antenna wire down that passenger side "A" pillar

The damage I had was the lower rear corner of the cab, drivers side.

They did have to remove trims and such to repair the uniside.
