The ride quality is less important than the capability. They are vastly different in those terms. I've owned both and while there is a noticeable difference I'm not sure I'd say (IMO) dramatically different.I would encourage you to drive both a 2500 and a 3500 before making your decision. They are dramatically different in their ride.
In the OP's case, unless they anticipate moving up to something much larger and much heavier in the future a 3500 is overkill in any flavor, as is a diesel for its current purpose.
