High probability of rubbing with the 17x10. Those rims are made for the AEV 40 conversion. 17x8.5 you might have slight rubbing at full lock on an arm, but you won't have to trim anything. I run 17x8.5 Saltas with 37x12.5 KM3s and don't rub anywhere.

Back on the OP's question: yes, you should cover that. It would be a pain in the butt, but if you remove the liner, you could get some sheet ABS (?) or similar plastic from amazon and epoxy in a patch panel.

I actually ended up getting some sheet abs and forming some plates to fill in the gaps. I used plastic weld to glue it all together.
After all that I noticed that AEV had their silver Salta's on sale so I just went ahead and bought a set of them since I figured i'd eventually go to 37's down the road.
