Hey guys, I have been off for a little while with all types of issues with my other trucks. But I’m back!

I have a 2012 ram 5.7l hemi. 95k miles. When I got it a year ago I had the exhaust manifolds fixed. I got a hot idle tick following that which was quieted down with redline oil. My warranty that came with a truck ended today and I got the truck in the shop yesterday so it would still be covered. they told me the exhaust manifolds looked good and no broken bolts. Here is a video of the noise coming from driver wheel well after the truck had been running about 5-10min.

To me I think it’s lifters. I had to roll the dice and authorize tear down knowing that if I’m wrong I’ll be on the hook for a 4K bill. If I’m right, it’ll be a $100 deductible. They said they’d be using OEM parts only. Of course if I have to pay for it I may go with Texas speed stuff. They will resurface the heads and everything.

What do you guys think? Was I right to authorize the job? 4K would be pretty rough for me right now but I felt like it’s now or never because it’s the last chance I’ll have to get it paid for by the warranty company. Is there anything I should have them do while they have it opened up?

Thanks everyone

Garden variety hemi tick there. Well, lets assume it is hemi tick from lifters, how would that relate to visible damage? Most of the time they don't tick from anything but poor design. I guess you will find out if there is an issue, to me the shop should have advised you better, and 4 grand to remove heads is gross, even todays money.

So redline stopped working and is in there now?

So 4 grand and they replace lifters and cam regardless, only they pay if they see damage?

my thought was that there would be some damage to the cam from a lifter than isn’t functioning properly. I may be wrong. Redline 5w30 was doing well but I went 4.5k oci on the last go around and it didn’t sound great at the end.

And yes, they said 3.5k-4 including all labor parts and fluids as well as resurfacing the heads. They pay if it’s prove able that they weren’t working properly I guess.

With it not being the manifolds, do you not think it’s a lifter?

If you are lucky the lifter roller is bad, lifter tick doesn't mean anything wrong with the lifter, but in some cases the roller is bad.

Does that include the cam? If you are going to spend the coin, or possibly spend the coin, I could justify it if it was cam and lifter, not just lifters and heads. good luck, keep us updated.

I gotcha. They haven’t started the work and I can still go pick it up. With no misfire do you think I should go grab it? And one thing I forgot to say is sometimes in the morning when you give it gas it doesn’t really speed up, it lags for like ten seconds. Not common though. It did go into limp mode one time a few months ago, still no codes.

Sounds like you wasted $100 at minimum and $4k at max. All I hear is a normal hemi sound.

My ears aren't what they use to be, riding the harley has left me a few deaf areas, but I would have never torn that engine down

I hope it comes out in your favor

Well, I don't want to be the source of a grown man's or woman's decision, I just help where I can, you already made a decision and if that number is correct cam and lifters for 4 grand at worse, that is very fair price, more fair to you then them. So redline 5w30 isn't in there now?

You should have posted here earlier, maybe we could have done some things had you cut open filter, check oil control valve, maybe drop oil pan not as easy as some vehicles, but now you have a time crunch.

Well, I went into the shop and they had started yesterday so no chance of backing out. Good news is they don’t need to see a damaged cam or crushed lifter, they said any indication at all that a lifter isn’t functioning correctly will justify the cam and lifter job. Furthermore, this price of 3500ish will include a factory cam. They are willing to allow me to bring in an upgraded cam from Texas speed or something but they said it may cause warranty issues with their work.

Thoughts? I realize I screwed up by not coming to you guys sooner. I’m so paranoid about my trucks it’s frequent I make things worse just trying to do the right thing. And I have handled jobs myself of similar difficulty it’s just this warranty has been more harm than good making me stress about getting it covered. On my other lbz duramax and my OBS ford I just simply know I’m the one fixing it and it doesn’t stress me out like this.

stay with stock parts no matter what, unless you are doing an MDS delete? If it were me, I'd stay with OEM.

I need to add to the when not to use redline thread, if you are considering warranty work, lol...

Yeah, I have redline in there now but this shop knows me and they won’t rat on me lol they said they won’t tell them about anything like that and they’ll do whatever they possibly can to get it approved. They are good guys. I do wish they dug into issues more though, diagnostic work has lacked in my experience but every mechanic here is the same way. I’ll stay OEM!

Have them pull the VVT solenoid and check it for metal filings. If it has metal on it,you need a cam/lifter for sure. They can pull it and look at it before actually pulling the heads to check the lifters

I even asked them if there was any way to check and they said no. That’s a little shady.

That sound is 100% a roller ready to fall off of the lifter have done many camshaft jobs on these.
Forgive me for my ignorance as I haven’t taken on this job before. If a roller lis ready to fall off the lifter do you think there will be any physical evidence at this point? On the cam, roller, or the lifter pins? That’s really where my hope is coming from to get it covered. I should get the call today, it’s taken them two days for tear down so far. I imagine they aren’t working on it all day.

A quick inspection of the wheel and a spin by finger will tell you if the lifter wheel is bad

Well gentleman, it all worked out. That noise was in fact a few jacked up lifters and the beginning stages of the cam going downhill. There is clear scoring on it, but it’s very minimal. The warranty company will be paying for it. Any recommendations on things to do while they’re in there? Water pump will be done, short tube headers, new t stat, and fluids of course. Any thing else?

Hopefully they're also replacing the cam and all the timing components and not just stuffing new lifters in it. If you're original thermostat is still good,re-use it,odds are it'll better then any new thermostat you stick in it,at the very least, get the old thermostat back,so you can stick it back in if your new t-stat goes bad in a couple months. Have your stock exhaust manifolds planed or sanded flat and install them with Remflex 6022 gaskets instead of installing shorties. Shorties no matter which brand you buy are famous for cracking, and they don't add squat for power.
