So, I went to clean my truck today, and I opened my hood and decided to start with the engine. Now, a little back story, I recently bought the truck and according to carfax it was originally in new York. Looking at the engine bay, you can tell. There is a ton of rusty areas, and the valve covers and alot of the engine is covered in salty corrosion.
I say all that to say this...a simple cleaning of my engine has turned into a tear down and deep clean ;). So far I've been working on cleaning all hoses, and I have all the plastic (air flow) removed. Of course, this lets me have easy access to the throttle body, so I removed and cleaned it. Here is the before pic...ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347062673.941115.jpg

It's all nice and pretty now, but too dark to take pics. Tomorrows agenda includes removing the valve covers, sanding and painting them, replacing them, tonight I'll be overhauling all plastic I removed and glossing them up, replacing all spark plugs and busting away at any other corrosion I can get to. I'll post updates as they happen.

By the way, throttle response is incredible now!!! Like a new truck!

Definitely. That's why I'm spending so much time on the air intake areas tonight in the house...and or course I'm replacing the filter...

I meant to ask before, anyone have any other suggestions while I have it all opened up?

Are you looking to add performance, or just freshen everything up?

I'm freshening, but not opposed to a quick performance boost...if the price is close to free

WHile doing this cleaning, take off your valve covers, etc, and give em a nice color to brighten up the engine bay, and some clear to make it shine. U will love the result.

Anything I can use to wrap my wires (lights and stuff) up so they're not all over the place?

I already bought the paint ;). Going with white to match the truck. I'll post pics when I'm all done

Zip ties or wire loom. Both available at parts stores

So, today is valve cover removal and painting. Also, for rusty bolts that you don't want to completely replace, wire brush, rust converter and paint pen. It's been working great to make my engine bay closer to new looking while I wait for the engine to cool

Okay....so right now the only thing keeping me from getting my Valve Covers off is the damn Wire holders in the back of the engine...any ideas on how to get them off? they cover the last two bolts used to remove the valve covers

They just pry off. A flat head screw driver will get them or a small mechanic pry bar. The valve cover bolts there have studs for them to sit on. Pull the erg pipe to make pulling the cover easier also. Think you mentioned doing plugs if not deff do it while its all apart. You could install new coil boots and wires also while your there.
