Hello all. I recently upgraded from my 4th gen 1500 or a 5th 2500 Laramie CC. I am looking at tossing the twentys that came on the truck, and order up a set of 17x9.5 with 35x12.5 rubber.

But, I understand the HD trucks carry a different load rating with their tires. I am looking to run a good A/T tire like Mickey Baja or Wildpeaks. My question is....do I need to get a F load rated tire, or E? 8 ply vs 10 ply?

If I ran an E rated tire, will the dash be constantly telling me my pressure is low? I do have Alpha OBD, so I could probably find a setting for that.

Any education on this is appreciated!

Thanks,
Nathan
All the flotation tires are E rated. LT's can be D's. You don't need an F unless you're carrying a heavy camper. I'd compromise and get 18's with a 3/4 ton. Way higher load capacity than 17's with the exception of the Toyo MT's 35-12.50-17. They have a 124 load capacity. I'm returning to 285's. My 35's killed my fuel economy.

Well the load capacity of 17s falls right in line with the GAWR for the rear of the truck. So do I really need a tire that can handle more than what the truck is rated for?

it is important to confirm that the Load Index in the tire's service description of the new tire is equal to or greater than the Load Index of the original tire and/or that the new tire's rated load capacity is sufficient to carry the vehicle's gross axle weight ratings.

the answer to that is no you don’t need a tire that can handle more that what your axle ratings are for. It will be a softer tire and good for off road( the power wagon has D tires factory) but will flex faster and will feel squishy under heavy loads, but it will handle it.

So...load range ratings. Would an E1 be better than an E2 or vice versa? Doesn't the number of equivalent plies in the construction make one a better option that another?

Here is what I want to do. 2021 Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo, crew cab, 4x4, 8 ft. bed. Current tires are the stock 285/60R/20's . What issues am I going to run into by putting on 35X/12.5's ?? If I need to remove the inner wheel well liners on the front no problem.

Load Range E1 10ply tire, max load carrying capacity at 80psi
Load Range E2 still a 10ply tire, max load carrying capacity at 65psi.

I think that the E2 has a stiffer side wall compared to the E1 if you are able to run at a lower pressure to be able to carry the same weight.

Depends on what you are looking to do.

You would be an inch & half taller and one inch wider than the OE tire if you ran a 35x12.50R20. I think you might be ok, but check and see if there is a need for a level on the front.

E2 carry the load at a lower pressure because they have more volume due to being a wider tire, not because the sidewalls are any stronger. Wider tires have more square inches so less pressure needed to provide same force to the ground.
