tow/haul- engine brake .

Question for those of you who drive mountain passes. On long steep down-grades, do you use

1. tow/haul only.

2. Tow/haul with engine brake (or is this the same thing)

3. Jake brake only?

How much are you towing?

Maybe it turns on when you plug in trailer?

I used tow haul and the exhaust brake if the road called for it.
you have both and its fine to use both or either one by themselves.

You don't have a jake brake...only an exhaust brake.....2 different things.

Only big rigs have jake brakes.

I'm wondering if there is any ware to engine. I have 2500 5.9 towing 7000# 5th wheel.Would using exhaust / engine braking be good to use and does it save that much on brake ware. Which is most cost effective. Standard braking or eng braking. Cost about $2K to install, right$

I do know that if the road is slippery using the transmission or the engine brake can potentially cause a jack knife because the truck is braking and the trailer is rolling free pushing it.

When I had my 2010 Dually w/ the 6.7 Cummins in it, I ran the exhaust brake ALL the time, except in bad weather conditions. Constant use kept the turbo vanes moving freely. That and the fact that the emissions junk fell off!!! ;-)
