One way to tell is go into the Trailer Tow settings on your EVIC. Scroll through the trailer options. If you don't see a section for TTPMS, then you likely don't have it.

so, this is a factory installed option? If that is the case, would the trailer TPMs have to be the same as factory TPMs in the vehicle tires? Or, does it recognize any after market TPM modules?

even an aftermarket trailer TPM would have to be compatible with the OEM system? Or, can it be flashed into the computer? You'd have to buy special hardware, IF you have the factory harness?

i'm just asking out of curiosity

I dont think that option was even available back then. Thought it was something new in like 18 or 19? I use a aftermarket system from TST for my RVs tires. Had it for years and it works fine. And I can install it on any trailer easily.

If you don't care about it being integrated with the truck (you may not have that option anyway), the Tymate setup from Amazon works well. You will probably want to get the repeater (available separately or as part of the 6 sensor kit). Probably cheaper than buying 1 or 2 OEM type sensors too.

I'd guess they have to be the factory sensors. My truck came with the sensors in a bag that I had to have installed in my trailer tires.

I don't know the answers to those questions. Maybe @Jimmy07 does?

From what I'm reading, the TRAILER tpms system wasn't available until 2019/2020 for Ram trucks. Which means his 2016 wouldn't have it unless someone installed an aftermarket system or retrofit a 2019+ system into his truck.

I got it on my 2022 3500 and the trailer sensors came in an bag and had to be installed in the trailer tires.

The trailer TPMS sensors came with my 2024 Ram 3500 in a separate package, along with instructions. I am having the Camping World techs install them on my new Montana 5th wheel trailer. These are the Mopar parts from the factory.

After considering the options (a few years ago), I decided that I didn't like the in-tire implementions for TPMS (probably more of a personal preference, I guess). I ended up selecting an after-market system which allowed me several flexible options, which fit my needs and usage-cases, at what I thought was a reasonable price-point. In my case, I chose one called "EezTire" (ref. eezrvproducts.com); but I know other people who chose other options (and/or manufacturers) and have been just as happy with the result.
