Hey everyone!

I have a 01 Ram 1500 5.9 rwd auto trans. The trans is goin out and lookin to do a swap just to keep it on the road a lil while longer.

The potential doner is a 97 ram 1500 5.2 rwd auto. Got a deal on it and I know it was rebuilt and has 30k before the engine blew (not from racing it).

However, the trans is different than the 01. The difference that I can tell is the pans are different being the 97 has a hump in the middle and a different shape around the flange. I believe the 01 is the 46re.

Is this swap possible? If so what all would I need to do to make it work?

Thanks

The 97 should be a 46re. I have 2 97's and both have 46re trans in them

If the trans pan in the '97 model is different from the pan I'm your '01 model I'd say the transmission behind the 5.2 in the '97 is a 44RE and not a 46RE like your 2001 model. See if this pic helps identify the different trans pans...trans pans.jpeg

I don't remember the gasket surface shape. I only remember the 97 pan being smooth with a square pyramid shaped hump center front of the pan and not a rectangular shape. I saw pics of the same pan yesterday but can't seem to find them now.

I'm thinkin there's no problem bolting it up. Only issue should be the trans pcm which I'm gonna take with the trans anyhow and hope I can get it to install. Although I have read about sensors being moved around and dunno what to expect there.

Rooster comb and nutral safety switch might be different. One is 3 pin connector other is 5 pin. You can interchange everything you need to between the 96 and 01

You can put whatever trans you want in that dodge come on now ! 747 518 618 47 46 48 45 44 re rh what ever you want. Trucks 01 to 20 have different nss depending on weather you want gear indicator and no start in gear. I just swapped out a. 01 46re 4 speed for an older second gen 518 6 speed in a dango 5.9 I don't have indicator but gained I push button start switch. ECU TCM ECM all good no problem shifting Speedo works right all good.
