but i’ve also heard when that gets bypassed the pressure drops

So the couple guys I know with that trans and an aftermarket cooler have no pressure issues.

sorry I should’ve been more clear on what i ment by bypass the thermostatic valve apparently if you bypass it can cause the transmission to lose pressure

side note being my first ram product i’ve owned. I’m a GM guy always had a gmc pickup 1500 series got the ram 2500 cause the 8500 pounds dry camper was a litttle much for the 1500 and 2500 gm products are out of control price wise. One stark contrast i’ve noticed and i’m sure it’s just something i’ll get used to is my gmc 5.3 at 5000rpm sounds like it’s just barley wound up the 5.7 hemi in my truck sounds maxed out 5000rpm .

So a few things with these transmissions.

1) The biggest culprit is there is a thermostatic valve on the cooler lines that will not open til 170*. Which could be an issue. I’ll link my video to the replacement of this valve at the bottom.

2) if everything is working properly you shouldn’t see anything over 200*. I’ve towed my 10,340lb loaded camper over some pretty steep grades in the southern Rockies at 100*+ OAT, never seen it over 200*. All of this was prior to Valve replacement.

The valve could be stuck partially closed/opened (all depending on how you look at life! LoL). They have been know to fail at all different time/mileage and blow transmissions up.

Easiest thing to do is pay the $103 and replace it. Super easy and you don’t lose a lot of fluid.

Also a trans temp general guide.

Interesting and thanks. Last winter I noticed my tranny temps within 10° of my coolant temps several times while plowing and driving between accounts. It consistently ran at least 20° lower in the past.

Think I'll give this a try.

My 2500 towing a 30 foot TT will usually be in the 80's Celcius, not towing, it's in the 70,s, driving with tow/haul mode on and not towing, the temps are higher by a few degrees.
Nothing that's abnormal to me.

Is the thermostatic valve the same on the 6 speed in the 1500 as the 2500 trucks? Will be towing my 25' 5000# hybrid camper and looking to do preventative stuff before we start dragging it down the high way.

No, your valve is closer to the cooler. You could just cut the lines before the valve and add an external cooler in line.

If i do that and the thermostatic valve is still in line wouldn't that just stop the hot fluid from moving anywhere? Is the thermostatic valve removable? Would it harm the trans during cold weather I wonder?

I have a 8 speed so it isn’t the same but I was towing my 5000# hybrid from Niagara to Algonquin and even in the stop and go of Toronto traffic I only makes at 97deg. On transmission

It depends on the transmission you have, if you bypass the valve or remove it than the pump in the transmission will continue to pump the fluid through the cooler

OK, I just returned from a camping trip towing my 9,000 pound Airstream trailer, 220 miles each way. I do have the 5.7L with 8-speed transmission and 3.92 gears (I love this combination). On the way to the campground, I got about 11.8 mpg and the transmission temperature was in the 170's, I think it hit 181 once, the outside temperature was in the mid to upper 70's (perfect!!). On the way home yesterday, I got about 10.7 mpg and the transmission temperature was in the high 170's most of the time, it did hit the low 180's several times, and 185 at the highest, the outside temperature was in the upper 80's to low 90's (Hot for me). We had the AC going the whole time on the way home, I think that is why the mileage went down. The roads around here (western Washington and western Oregon) are not flat, so the transmission shifted often, I used Tow/Haul mode the whole time and limited the transmission to 7th gear most of the time and 6th and even 5th gear some (never let it go into 8th when towing). I rarely exceed 60 mph while towing. Good trip overall, the truck performed well.

hmmm....big difference from my old truck. I towed my sons 7500lb camper 200 miles down then a couple months later towed it back. All highway with my 2013 1500 QC 5.7 3.55 6 speed (or 5, can't remember but it was an Express). Got about 8 MPG and used tow/haul the whole way.
