What do you mean, automatic to manual? Or a regular ram to a sport model. Either way yes.

not completely true.. but maybe for the gasser world.

I know my 12V diesel's tcase from the auto (241LD) wouldn't work on the nv4500 after the swap.
I had to source a manual tcase (241HD) as the splines were bigger.

Yeah that doesn't apply to the Cummins world. Even if the splines were different its the same tcase for the gassers so swap the input/output shafts if they were. Besides as a general fuller I rebuild tcases everytime I put a used one in a truck. It's fairly simple and just good sense.

true, true. I've rebuilt quite a few 231s. Worst part is taking that damned snap-ring off of the output shaft .

Did I miss something? Are the adapter plates the same on the auto & manual? Didn't Dodge use a variety of T/Cs in the second gen. I believe my V-10 has the same as the diesel. The 5.9 gassers used a different T/C. The splines are also different I thought.
So bottom line you need to be sure you get the same model T/C auto to stick.

I'm pretty sure the difference is merely an adapter plate

Ok I got the transfercase and its a 241 and I pulled mine off and its a 231 every thing looks the same except the 241 is a little bigger and the front drive shaft out of the tcase is a spline and my 231 had a nut holding the companion flange on what to do to make it work

Agreed. The 231 has a 3-gear planetary section, and the 241 is a 6-gear unit.

The NV231 transfer case is used behind many V6 and V8 engines in pickups and sport utility vehicles.

The NV231HD, used in the 1994+ Ram with V6 and V8 engines, features larger bearings and a wider chain than the NV231. All versions of the 231 cases use three gears in the planetary reduction set.

The NV241 is essentially a NV231HD with six gears in the planetary set.

The NV241D is a heavier duty Dodge version of the 241, with a larger input shaft and larger bearings to withstand the torque of the V10 and diesel engines.

The NV241HD, an option on Ram 2500's and standard on Ram 3500's built after 1998, has a stronger case and wider drive chain to better withstand the shock of snow plow service, a PTO cover and drive gear, and an extra bearing to support the thrust to the main shaft created by a PTO adapter.

Except for dimensional differences and the PTO port on the NV241HD, all of the cases are almost identical in appearance. An identification tag is attached to the rear case of every transfer case. The tag provides the transfer case model number, assembly number, serial number, and low range ratio. The transfer case serial number also provides the date of build. For example, a serial number of 9-10-93 would represent September 10, 1993.

Is it a 241LD or HD?
If the front output is a slip-style HD tcase, and you want to convert to flange style, you'll need to replace the 241HD output shaft HD# QU10200 ($60) and QK2006 flange kit ($289)

LD parts are shaft QU50505 ($130) and QK2006 flange kit ($289)

QUAD 4x4 Home Page - DODGE

that's where I get my NV4500/NV5600/231/241 parts from.

If it's a CV flange front driveshaft, I doubt it.

I'd have to look, but I don't recall seeing a slip yoke tcase for a front driveshaft. All the ones I've seen, the driveshaft, itself, handles the compressions. do you have a pic of this? what year is it out of?

Only slip-yoke front tcase flanges I've seen are like old IHs or Broncos, etc.

Ok, it's an "LD" style of the 241 for Dodge; I didn't realize there was so much difference from it and the Jeep version. The Jeep 241D is a bolt-on for the front output shaft.

Is it a 32 spline? The Rubicon 241OR uses the slip-style, and is 32 spline.
