Howdy.. Being its nice out and the service is overdue I decided to change the filter in my trans (1998 ram 1500 4wd) and the filter I pulled seems to be a plastic housing with the filter inside. The auto store gave me a Hastings fiber filter with no housing, I can't see this being right.

The two are significantly different in depth, the plastic housing seems to have the filter inside however isn't accessible

Not sure I would use the new one. My filter was also a metal/plastic housing with a fiber filter inside, and the new filter I installed was the exact same. I would take it back and find a better one.

I used WIX and it was exactly like my old filter.

Against my better judgement I installed the Hastings and ran Penzoil synthetic, now when it gets up to temp it won't shift from 2nd to 3rd unless I take my foot off the gas. My local Dodge dealer can't seem to get the filter right, 3 weeks later and still mia. Going to a different dealer tomorrow to get the right filter and fluid then keep my fingers crossed.:party52:

O'reily is a great auto parts store, I drove out to Arizona in my Ramcharger and passed one on the way somewhere around Tennessee, they had a lot of stock on hand and very helpful even though all I needed was an air filter. I opened an account at Napa and so far it's all been garbage

O'reilly is definitely higher on stuff than Rockauto or the like, but when I need something NOW, it's definitely the way to go, IMO.

I get a purolator filter kit from advance auto parts near my house, and it looks exactly like my stock filter, the metal/plastic housing with the filter inside.

My truck does exactly this. I've heard that the bands need to be adjusted. Anyone have any advice?

Those filters are slightly different i believe. The one on the right is for 97 and older. The one on the left is 98 and up. I just did a service on a 96 and the filter is different from my 98 and 2000. Just a little tidbit of info.

yes the bands need to be adjusted if you've recently done a service but also how bad is the shift problem? I had the same thing as well as 3rd to 4th not wanting to go sometimes not at all, turned out to be the governor, spent the $200 and just replaced both the governor sensor and solenoid, fixed it. Might not be your problem so makin sure your bands are adjusted is a good start
