can be done. I don't know the specifics of a 46RE but typically you will need a longer output shaft and tail housing with the transfer case. If you have the hardparts of a 4WD trans and just need to swap the main part out, should be doable. if you need to track down a bunch of 4WD parts, may be easier just to find a 4WD trans/transfer case.

Usually (depending on year) the only real difference between later 2wd & 4wd versions of a trans are the tailshaft (2wd) and transfer case adapter (4wd). Remove one, install the other.

I'm curious about this too. I have a 4x4 but can only find 2x4 trannies at the yard. Can I rebuild the main part and then just do the overdrive section when I do the swap?
