Hello Everyone. 2022 Ram 2500 6.7. Been working in Colorado for a few weeks not and we always have our camper. It's between 8000lb and 8500lb loaded. We have been up and down I-70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel a few times since we've been here. Trans temp always seems to run between 168-171 degrees. Today we decided to head down to Silverton, CO through Ouray, CO. Trans temp got to 197 while pulling up the switchbacks but decreased while coming down the other side. Seemed like the temp took a little long to come back down.

Is this temp OK for towing up switchbacks? I was in tow haul mode the entire time and I decided to choose the gear myself, locking out 4th-6th. Truck has 12,000 miles on it.

Any insight or advice you can give on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

That's a fairly normal temp for a modern transmission.

Thank you for your replies. Looks like everything seems ok. Tranny fluid still nice and pink. It is overfilled from the factory. Might need to have them drain some.

My 18 CTD tranny runs in the 165-168 range when towing my 6-7K trailer. The elevation changes here in the Ozarks are not like the rocky mts, but they are still some pretty good hills. I'm headed out to the Rockies with it today for a week of dirt biking, so I'll keep an eye on temps when we hit the front range. I don't think I'd worry about the temps you're seeing on a long pull though.

Here's my dash when just cresting the Monarch Pass (11+K) in Colorado yesterday afternoon. Air temp was low 80's and sunny. Was going from West to East. It's a long, twisty climb. Trans temp was not elevated at all. This was pulling a 7K 20' Vee nosed double axle trailer. Passed a lot of folks going up (passing lane provided for quite a way toward the top). Full air brake on the way down was awesome too, of course.

My 3200 runs at 168 99% of the time. Once it reached 197 on a very steep grade with many switchbacks. I was not towing and the speed was around 20 mph. So very little airflow.
