After my drive to work this morning, I was sitting in my truck with it idling when the engine sputtered for 5-10 seconds, nearly stalling, then recovered. Two minutes later the engine stalled out entirely and refuses to start. The obvious issues to me would be fuel delivery system or ignition circuit. I am ruling out bad gas because the sputtering and stall-out with bad gas are typically more violent and drawn out.

My question is, how or where am I able to confirm fuel is in fact being delivered to the cylinders? Also, How and where can I confirm an effective spark is being produced. I am a one man operation so turning the key while under the hood is not a likely scenario. Furthermore, are there any "usual suspects" concerning the ignition or fuel circuits of gen 3s that I should direct my attention to?

Thank you in advance. Tow truck should be here shortly. TGIF!

If you turn the key to the run position you should hear the fuel pump running for a few seconds.

That's right! I remember that. I does not seem to be making that electric whirring sound.

Points to fuel pump or possibly fuel pump relay.
Vertical Vision makes a fuel pump relay jumper /bypass
Use our forums search function, it is full of info to help .

Fuel pump relay is good. I swapped it out with the wiper speed relay and it functions as intended. All signs point to fuel pump failure.1000017653.jpg1000017651.jpg

You could get the required fittings to measure the fuel pressure at the fuel rail, to confirm that diagnosis.

.
Maybe I will. Is it required the engine is cranking to get an accurate pressure measurement? Or do I attach the pressure guage and rely on the measurement while the truck is static?

step one disconnect fuel line take a empty bottle sitck the line in it crank it a second and see if you have any fuel at all if not then thats your issue.

That's definitely a great go/no go test.

I was thinking about something using a pressure gauge on the fuel line at the rail.

Amazon sells fuel pressure test kits with a gauge and multiple fittings for prices from about $25 to $75.

IIRC, the fuel rail pressure specification is +/- 2 PSI.

And isn't the fuel line pressurized as soon as you set the key to the 'On' position without cranking?

.

Yes, the pump should run for a few seconds to prime the system when the key is turned on but not running

These lean codes could be because it ran out of gas. Check fuel rail pressure or like mentioned, disconnect the line and and see if gas shoots out when you turn the key on.

Update: Using a schrader valve tool, I removed the schrader valve entirely from the fuel rail. There was absolutely no pressure or fuel behind the valve. I attempted to start the truck and no fuel came out.

Ok now check to make sure the fuel pump is getting power. If its getting power then replace the pump. If theres no power then theres other issues and further diagnostics will be needed
