About a month ago my truck started whining at startup but would eventually go away, now it's constant and driving me nuts, anyone had this and fixed it? Sounds almost like a high pitched metallic sound.

I suggest checking the belt and idler pulley. I’ll bet money it’s the idler pulley.
Have you ever changed the belt since new? How many miles are on the truck?

No it’s not hard at all.
The job can be done in an hour with just basic hand tools and an 18” breaker bar.

I just went out to check for excessive play and don't think there was, I'm going to try to replace the belt and the idler pulley on the morning.

Great idea. I believe that will fix the problem. Be sure to let us know how it went. Maybe take a video if you can and post it.

Maybe find the section on replacing the belt and see what they call it.

Idler pulley is the one that don’t do anything. Probably has a stiff coil spring behind it.

You tube has tons of How to videos as mentioned. My son has done most of his own work using the You Tube videos as a guide.. Please update your results ! If the Belt does not help try going about 25 MPH and push the other half out the passenger door :O The whine should go away :O

This won't be of any help, but I read the title to your thread and thought--****, someone came over to your house and put a supercharger on your truck for you-----LOL

My 2012 started squealing pretty loud when I started it and would squeak/chirp at idle walker this year.

I replaced the serpentine belt, the idler pulley, and the belt tensioner.

At first I just replaced the belt & idler pulley. That quieter it down some but didn’t get rid of it. It ended up being the tensioner. Both are very easy to replace, just takes a little time.

This should help.

So bit of an update, couldn't get to it today and had to drive about 300 miles today, whine still there but was fine today... Going to tackle it later on this week, I'll try to do a video showing the process, thanks everyone.

after you pull the belt, spin all the pullies that you can by hand and listen for any rubbing noise. Also start the truck briefly to see if the noise is present.
