TT tires

I hope that this isn’t too off topic, but I have been wondering...


We have the Goodrich All Terrain LT tires on out 3500 dry weight travel trailer. I have been wondering if there is a “time limit” on those babies. What I mean is that there is obviously a mileage limit- good for 50,000 miles or whatever. But is it smart to change every 5 years or do good tires not rot from the inside out?

Although I'm sure where you live plays into life of a tire. I wear mine out before age comes into play.

Check them for cracks frequently and start thinking about replacing them when they get down to 4-5/32nds when/if you run across a good deal. Of course that also depends on the terrain too. If you're towing thru steep, wet, icy, snowy, etc conditions on a regular basis maybe more often than that. I have never heard of or seen a tire dry rot from the inside out so I wouldn't worry about that.

I read an article in popular mechanics that says tires should be replaced between 6-10 years after manufacture because of dry rot.

I know that it’s a common practice to replace TT tires around 5 years. I was just wondering if LT tires had a longer life. I’m guessing not especially when you consider the torque the sidewalls take... thanks for helping me think this through

I replaced the tires on my travel trailer when I noticed the weather checking on them. I also didn't like that there was one off brand tire as a spare there.

Now there are all the same brand tire on the trailer. I keep wheel covers on them to protect them too.

Have pulled RV's for 30 yrs and was in the business. I do tend to error on the safe side but I change tires every 4 years. Have seen way to much damage on older tires even if they look good they can be trouble. Right now I believe the Goodyear endurance is the best tire for RV's.

I also run LT tires on my trailer, keep them out of the sun and spray some silicone on them and that will help a bit and I wondered the same thing. I bought a new set but they are in the garage still as the old ones look great.
Being a 6000# single axle trailer, I hate to lose a tire at high speed so I will most likely change next year and the current ones are fairly old but look great. It also doesn't sit out in the sun and I am sure that helps.

If you have to ask, replace them! I cannot tell you the amount of times I see people with blowouts or crashed in the median due to "waiting" until they are needed. On any vehicle.

And I see you are in AZ so the heat will play a major factor.
