Hi all,

I took my truck to a mechanic to diagnose the check Engine light and they told me it was the active grill shutter and it was nothing that made the vehicle unsafe. The two codes that were coming up were the ones in the title, U0140 and P1D73. I got a code reader since then to keep an eye on it, see attached photos.

my question is Should I attempt to repair this myself or take some of the shutters off? Come inspection time I don’t think I am going to pass due to the check engine light being on. Basically is this something I need to address ASAP? Or in hot weather? I am planning a trip to the southwest in the heat with my truck.

should I just **** it up and pay for it all? Or erase the codes so it at least passes inspection and deal with it when I can? I’m a grad student so money can be tight!

any insight would be appreciated

If it was my truck, I would get it fixed under warranty or out of pocket. You won't pass inspection and/or that light would drive me insane seeing it on everyday. Just my thoughts.

I've read about other people with the same code who said the problem was not with the active grill shutters, but was with the active air dam. The two are apparently connected somehow, so you should be certain whether it's the AGS or the AAD that's causing the code. Because of this I'd probably take it in, especially if it's still under warranty. Since you didn't mention any details about your truck I'm going to assume it's a 5th gen at least, since these are the 5th gen boards.

I’ve ran into this issue a few times now. The active grille shutter and active air dam are on the same LIN bus circuit. If either one goes bad it can cause loss of communication with both of them. Every time I’ve come across this on the new DT trucks it’s been the active air dam that’s faulty.
